Few movies have generated more demand for a sequel than 1985’s The Goonies. The film was a huge success upon release and has become a beloved part of pop culture, even earning a place in the United States National Film Registry for its cultural importance. A sequel has been talked about for years, and the project recently gained momentum when Potsy Ponciroli was brought on to write the script. Now, Ke Huy Quan, an original star of The Goonies, has shared exciting news that fans will love.
I was chatting with Ke Huy Quan over at ComicBook while we were talking about Zootopia 2, and he let slip some awesome news about The Goonies! He hasn’t seen the script himself yet, but he said a second draft has been finished and everyone involved is super excited about how it’s shaping up. Fingers crossed we get to see it soon!
Ke Huy Quan first learned about the project when he saw Steven Spielberg, who was very enthusiastic about it. They’ve been trying to make it happen for 40 years, and Quan feels optimistic this time around. With Chris Columbus and Spielberg co-developing it and a strong writer already delivering a promising second draft, Quan is confident it will finally come to fruition. He even told his Zootopia 2 co-star, Fortune Feimster, that they’re going to do it and expressed his desire for her to be part of the project.
A Goonies Sequel Has Been a Long Time Coming

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the beloved film The Goonies, and fans have been hoping for a sequel for a long time. While the original cast has often expressed confidence that another movie would be made, it hadn’t happened – until now. Warner Bros. began developing a sequel in January, and officially confirmed the project in February.
Quan’s recent update on a second draft of the sequel script is encouraging news for the project. Josh Brolin, who starred as Brandon Walsh in the original film, mentioned back in August that several scripts had been written, but none felt quite right. Now, with positive feedback on this new draft, it seems like a Goonies 2 movie might finally be happening – something fans have wanted for decades.
