After the huge success of Godzilla Minus One, Japanese director Takashi Yamazaki is starting his first film in English: Grandgear. He’s working with J.J. Abrams, the producer of Cloverfield, through Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot, and also with producer Glen Zipper. Although the story is mostly a secret, a preview shown at CinemaCon hinted at an exciting sci-fi battle between monsters and giant robots. The film is scheduled to be released on February 18, 2028, and production will begin shortly.
After winning a competitive bid in late 2024, Sony Pictures has revealed more about its upcoming film, Grandgear. During a presentation at CinemaCon, the studio announced the release date and showed a sneak peek of footage. This gives audiences their first look at director Yamazaki’s next project, following the success of Godzilla Minus Zero, his Oscar-nominated sequel coming out later this year. Yamazaki will then direct an English-language film, promising even more giant monsters on the big screen.

A recent preview of Grandgear, as reported by ScreenRant, suggests a massive, action-packed story. The preview showed large, transforming robots clashing in a city battle, creating what the outlet called a “full-blown sci-fi spectacle.” The footage was filmed with a realistic, close-to-the-ground perspective, similar to Cloverfield, making the fantastical action feel intense and believable. This approach is reminiscent of Godzilla Minus One, which focused on compelling characters to make the monster feel like a genuine and terrifying threat.
This is a developing story…
