Display your flag, as Bandai Namco has unveiled a new short film that will accompany the theatrical spin-off movie of Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans – Urðr Hunt Special Edition: Path of the Little Challenger. In this fresh production, dubbed Makuai no Kusabi, we get a glimpse of intense new scenes involving characters from the original series, particularly Mikazuki Augus and Orga Itsuka. The trailer presents a novel version of the Gundam Barbatos that was not featured in the initial Iron-Blooded Orphans anime. This short film will be screened concurrently with the Urðr Hunt movie, slated for release in Japanese cinemas on October 31st, with international showings to follow at a later date.
The mobile game titled “Urðr Hunt” was set in the same timeframe as “Iron-Blooded Orphans.” This game introduced new characters and unfolded during the gap between the first and second seasons of the initial series. The original “Urðr Hunt” app included animated segments, or episodes, that narrated the game’s plot. The launch of “Urðr Hunt” occurred in November 2022, but it ceased services just a year later in January 2024. To commemorate the tenth anniversary of “Iron-Blooded Orphans,” Bandai Namco Filmworks (also recognized as Sunrise) chose to adapt the original storyline of “Urðr Hunt” into a film.
New Short and Movie Celebrates Ten Years of Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans
The television series Iron-Blooded Orphans centers around Tekkadan, a band of orphaned boys and men who once worked as mercenaries but eventually took control from their former bosses. The story follows Tekkadan’s journey to power and eventual downfall, starting off as underdogs before becoming famous. One of their most notable achievements was successfully escorting politician Kudelia Aina Bernstein in Season One, a feat that earned them recognition throughout the universe. Urðr Hunt now follows the adventures of Wistario Afam, a boy inspired by Tekkadan’s success. He encounters a mysterious young girl who alleges to be a guide for the “Urdr-Hunt,” initiating a new mission.
Despite some viewers finding the conclusion of the series, titled “Iron-Blooded Orphan,” a bit contentious, it still ranks among the most beloved anime within the Gundam franchise. The mobile suit design from Gundam Barbatos is particularly well-liked across the entire collection. To celebrate ten years since its debut, Bandai has launched an official “Iron-Blooded Orphans” tenth anniversary website on Gundam Info. This site includes a heartfelt message to fans expressing gratitude for their support and outlining Bandai’s future plans for the series. In addition to “Urðr Hunt,” there was also a spin-off manga, titled “Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans Steel Moon” or “Gundam Gekko.
In contrast to Iron-Blooded Orphans marking its decade-long journey, Bandai is likewise honoring the 30th anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam Wing. To celebrate, Bandai has joined forces with popular video games like Overwatch and Call of Duty to offer unique Mobile Suit Gundam Wing content. Furthermore, in collaboration with KFC, they’ve introduced exclusive Mobile Suit Gundam Wing merchandise at certain restaurants in China. At the San Diego Comic-Con for its 30th anniversary, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing held a spectacular panel, unveiling a new animated short that hints at a possible adaptation of the controversial sequel manga.
