Hacks Season 5 Is Officially Deborah Vance’s Perfect Ending

I’m still reeling from the Hacks finale! Seriously, between learning about Deborah’s hands and the show being over for good, it was packed with surprises. But the biggest shock wasn’t even that Deborah was facing her mortality, or her initial plan, or even her change of heart. It was that, after everything, Deborah Vance had one last performance left in her, and we, the audience, didn’t get to witness it. It felt like a punch to the gut!

Deborah Vance, the comedian, always stays true to herself, and so do the creators of the show Hacks – Lucia Aniello, Jen Statsky, and Paul W. Downs (who also appears as Jimmy on the series). They recently explained to ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender why they’ve decided to end Hacks after its fifth season.

Downs explained their goal was to end the show on a positive note, leaving viewers wanting more and remembering the laughter. And despite the emotional series finale of Hacks, it succeeded! The show wrapped up with Deborah and Ava enjoying Paris before heading back to Vegas, Jimmy and Ava taking the reins at Latitude, and the Diva officially launching. It was a truly satisfying conclusion.

The cast of Hacks is fantastic and everyone’s storyline wrapped up beautifully, but the show truly revolves around Deborah Vance. When the Emmys arrive in September, Jean Smart is the frontrunner to win the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. If she does, she’ll make history as the first actress to win this award for every season of a single show – a legacy Deborah Vance herself would definitely appreciate.

Deborah Vance Has Literally Done It All By The End Of Hacks Season 5

The creators of Hacks probably wanted to end the show while it was still great, and they definitely succeeded. However, considering how talented they are, the series could have easily continued for another amazing season. The problem is, the show has already explored Deborah’s journey thoroughly – she’s covered a lot of ground already.

At the start of the show Hacks, Deborah Vance was losing her popularity, and the potential end of her Las Vegas show felt like the beginning of the end of her career. Luckily, she set aside her pride and teamed up with Ava. Together, they worked their way back to success, culminating in Deborah’s incredibly personal – and ultimately very popular – comedy special at the end of season two.

Season 1 Deborah reluctantly hires Ava, and the two start working on Deborah’s deeply personal comedy special.
Season 2 Deborah goes on tour and sues Ava for violating her NDA. Eventually, Deborah drops the lawsuit and fires Ava, and her comedy special is a huge success.
Season 3 Deborah campaigns to host her own late-night talk show, eventually rejoining forces with Ava.
Season 4 Deborah is officially hosting her late-night show while Ava blackmails her way into the head writer position. The two end their feud, and Deborah is forced to choose between Ava and the show, picking the former.
Season 5 Deborah is desperate to make comedy history, and breaks a record for her comedy show in Central Park. Upon learning that she’s dying, she plans to end her life, but changes her mind to write one last special with Ava.

As a huge fan of Hacks, I’ve been completely invested in Deborah’s journey. It’s always been her ultimate goal to host a late-night talk show, and we see her really go for it in seasons 3 and 4 – she gets her dream, but it’s definitely not smooth sailing! Then, in what I think is the show’s best season yet, season 5 is all about her solidifying her place in comedy history after the talk show doesn’t work out. It all culminates in her absolutely crushing the attendance record for a comedy show in Central Park – it was an amazing moment!

By the series finale, Deborah realizes she has nowhere else to turn and nothing more to achieve. She doesn’t find a new purpose for living; instead, she continues because she’s a dedicated worker with tasks still to complete. Though her work isn’t finished, her personal journey is complete.

Deborah & Ava Are On Equal Footing In The Final Season

Deborah’s connection with Ava is just as central to the story as her work as a comedian, and their relationship has also come to a satisfying point. When the show begins, Deborah and Ava are a mismatched pair who argue and disagree far more often than they connect.

In season 2, a growing friendship between Ava and Deborah is damaged when Ava betrays Deborah, leading to a lawsuit and a clear re-establishment of their professional roles. While they eventually repair their relationship, Deborah worries she’s holding Ava back and decides to let her go, leading to separate career paths at the start of season 3. However, they inevitably find their way back to working together.

Things change when Deborah decides not to hire Ava as her head writer, but Ava, now much more assertive, manages to get the job anyway. Season 4 of Hacks features a fierce rivalry between Deborah and Ava, though they eventually reconcile and become true partners, especially in episode 7, which will please fans who hoped they’d end up together.

Throughout its run, Hacks skillfully navigated the challenge of Ava supporting Deborah while also prioritizing her own ambitions, and season 5 was no exception. Ava is equally dedicated to her budding television career and helping with Deborah’s show, and Deborah is right when she points out that Ava is truly capable and independent.

Deborah and Ava’s friendship has reached its peak – there’s nowhere else for it to go. Now, they just need to cherish the time they have together. While it would be great to see more of their adventures, nothing could top the perfect final scene of Hacks, where they strolled through Las Vegas, laughing and supporting each other.
