We’re currently seeing a surge in live-action adaptations of popular anime series. Netflix’s One Piece has been a huge success, with a third season already planned, and other well-known franchises like Mobile Suit Gundam, One-Punch Man, My Hero Academia, and Naruto are also getting live-action versions. While many of these projects are being developed in North America, Japan is also joining the trend. For example, a new live-action adaptation of the sports anime Haikyu is in development, as fans eagerly await the conclusion of the original series.
The popular anime series Haikyu!! has a strong history with stage plays, and while it hasn’t yet been adapted into a TV show or movie, it’s been very successful. Starting in 2015, nearly a dozen plays have brought the story to life on stage. Director Kenta Suga has announced that the upcoming performances, scheduled from December this year through January 2027, will be the last, concluding Haikyu!!‘s run on stage. You can get a sneak peek with the new teaser trailer below!
Serve Up Some Haikyu

Along with news of a new Haikyu!! stage play, the director has confirmed this will be the final production and shared details about the story. He says this installment will focus on the Inter-High School Championship qualifiers, making it an official match with higher stakes. He describes the first play as representing the team’s beginning, the second as continuing their legacy, and this final production as a climactic battle. He emphasizes the importance of every moment and point in these crucial qualifying matches.
We’re excited to reveal the visuals and scenery for our third production! As you’ve seen in the teaser, many familiar characters from the Haikyu!! stage play will be returning. We can’t wait to bring the world of Haikyu!! to life with them again, and we’re working hard to make it a fantastic show. Stay tuned for more!
If you’ve been watching the Haikyu!! anime, there’s one last movie coming to finish the story of Shoyo Hinata. Haikyu!! The Movie: Versus The Little Giant will be released next year and features the highly anticipated match between Karasuno High and Kamomedai High. Fans of the manga already know that the anime will conclude in an exciting way in 2027.
