*Warning – contains full spoilers for Half Man episode 6.*
The last episode of Half Man is now streaming on BBC iPlayer, concluding the story of Niall and Ruben’s friendship.
The final episode jumps ahead four years after the shocking events of the previous one. Ruben is in prison, and Mona has had a baby. Ruben thinks the child is his and sees it as a blessing, but Niall knows the truth: he is actually the father, the result of a brief encounter with Mona when she was going through a difficult time.
So, what happened after that? We’ll reveal what we discovered about Ruben and how the story unfolded at Niall’s wedding. Plus, Richard Gadd himself has shared details about the episode’s ending in a new interview with TopMob.
Read on for everything you need to know about the ending of Half Man.
Half Man ending explained: Did Niall finally come out to Ruben?

Ruben was allowed out of prison to go to his mother, Maura’s, funeral. While there, he accidentally overheard a conversation between Niall and Mona about a secret. The secret was that Mona’s son, Ben, was actually Niall’s son, not Ruben’s – but Ruben didn’t catch that part.
When Niall visited Ruben in prison, he knew he had to explain what he and Mona had been up to, even though Ruben was likely to be very angry.
After all these years, he finally told Ruben that he was gay.
Instead of getting upset like Niall expected, Ruben just laughed and said he wasn’t surprised at all. He admitted he’d suspected the truth for a long time – ever since they first met.
Ruben claimed he wasn’t bothered, but Niall challenged him on using offensive language. Ruben dismissed it, saying words are harmless, but Niall countered that they are hurtful. Ruben insisted the impact depended on how someone reacted, and Niall, clearly upset, retorted that he did find them hurtful.
Ruben pointed out to Niall that the person truly displaying homophobic behavior, and the only one who genuinely seemed to care, was someone in Niall’s own life. He felt he’d spent his life living to please others, and while he’d take responsibility for a small portion – around 10 to 15 percent – of Niall’s problems, he wouldn’t accept blame for any more than that.
Ruben reiterated that he wasn’t annoyed – he was proud.
What did we learn about Ruben’s past?

After Niall confided in Ruben, Ruben wanted to reciprocate and share his own difficult past. He revealed that his father had abused him, and when Niall asked if it involved physical violence, Ruben shockingly replied that was actually the least harmful part of the abuse. This led to Ruben breaking down and finally acknowledging the deep trauma he had endured.
He described the abuse he experienced from his father as deeply damaging, leaving him feeling incomplete and insecure. He explained that he’d spent his entire life striving to overcome these feelings and rebuild his self-worth.
After Ruben worried that Niall might judge him differently knowing the truth, Niall reassured him, calling him a hero and adding that he admired him even more now that he understood Ruben’s strength came from a difficult place.
Why did Ruben attack Niall at the wedding?

Okay, so the prison chat between Ruben and Niall finally gave us the ‘why’ behind that shocking wedding attack. It turns out, once they started opening up to each other, the floodgates opened – years of secrets and hidden truths just started tumbling out. It was a real unraveling, and honestly, a pretty compelling watch.
Their laughter was wild and unrestrained, and surrounded by such happiness, Niall decided it was the right moment to be honest with Ruben.
Niall’s final confession was a shocking one: he’d been having an affair with Mona while Ruben was gone, and Ben was actually his son, not Ruben’s. Ruben, who had been laughing moments before, was instantly devastated. The revelation shattered his world and set the stage for a dramatic confrontation at Niall’s upcoming wedding.
Niall stole Ruben’s happily ever after – he would be making sure to return the favour.
What happened between Niall and Ruben at the wedding?

Throughout the season, tensions had been rising, culminating in Ruben ambushing Niall at his wedding. He forced Niall into a barn and brutally attacked him.
During the struggle on the ground, Niall fought back and pulled a small knife, a sgian-dubh, from his sock. He stabbed Ruben in the side, but Ruben was still able to overpower him and ultimately suffocated Niall. While doing so, he shockingly cried out, “I love you, brother, yeah? I love you!”
With Niall finally gone, Ruben gathered his strength and sat up, despite still being wounded. He glanced at Niall’s body, then the screen faded to black as the credits began to roll.

We already knew by the end of episode 4 that Ruben had died in the barn, but the details of his death remained a mystery.
The show doesn’t reveal how either brother died. Viewers are left to interpret the evidence and decide for themselves what led to both of them being carried out of the barn in body bags.
Richard Gadd told TopMob he enjoys endings that are open to interpretation, though he doesn’t always plan for them when he starts writing.
He explained that the finale felt like the natural conclusion for both the series Baby Reindeer and his personal story. The show, he felt, was always about the audience piecing things together, and he wanted the ending to continue that theme, leaving viewers to draw their own conclusions.
I really struggled with how to end the story, honestly. I kept brainstorming different ideas, and it felt wrong to tie everything up neatly. It just didn’t feel right for such a complicated, messy tale. I wanted the ending to feel as messy as the story itself.
I often feel that neat, happy endings don’t really reflect how life works. We’re used to seeing it in movies – especially romantic comedies – where couples walk off into the sunset and everything seems perfect. But that creates a false idea that relationships stay that way forever.
I believe society has conditioned people to feel like they always need to be in a relationship, and to assume something’s wrong if it isn’t flawless. But realistically, life has its ups and downs, and it’s rarely simple.
I’ve always wondered why movies, TV shows, and plays usually wrap things up neatly. Real life is messy and confusing, and it’s hard to make sense of it all, so a tidy ending doesn’t really reflect how things are.
I always aim for complexity in my work, not just in how stories end, but throughout the entire show. I like to portray realistic, messy human behavior, because the world itself is so difficult to make sense of.
