Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, who recently starred together in the critically acclaimed film Hamnet (for which Buckley received a Best Actress nomination), are teaming up again for a new movie called Hold on to Your Angels.
Benh Zeitlin, the director of ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild,’ is writing and directing a new film. Production is scheduled to begin in February 2027, and the film will be produced by Plan B and Alex Coco’s Rapt Film.
The story unfolds in the Louisiana bayou and centers on a dangerous outlaw named Mescal and a determined protector of lost souls named Buckley. They fall deeply in love as the beautiful but decaying world around them collapses, pulling them into chaos.
According to Zeitlin, ‘Hold on to Your Angels’ is an incredibly moving love story – a passionate, rebellious romance unfolding against the backdrop of a fading South Louisiana.
I’ve wanted to share this story ever since I first met Pam Harper, the inspiring woman who auditioned for the film Beasts of the Southern Wild seventeen years ago. It’s a heartfelt tribute to a disappearing lifestyle, and a passionate plea for understanding in a world that often feels divided.

Plan B was incredibly impressed by Benh Zeitlin’s film, Beasts of the Southern Wild, calling it a magical and groundbreaking achievement. Now, with his new film, Hold on to Your Angels, Benh combines his signature realistic style with elements of myth and magic, but this time tells a sweeping and epic love story.
This filmmaker has a truly timeless vision, and we’re thrilled to be working with him, Jessie, and Paul on this project.

Coco also shared that, having worked with many filmmakers who focus on underrepresented stories, she believes Benh Zeitlin has a special talent for finding beauty and humanity in often-ignored parts of America, bringing those stories to life on film.
Most recently, Buckley starred in The Bride. Meanwhile, Mescal is currently filming a four-part film series about The Beatles, portraying Paul McCartney.
