Channel 4 is launching a new social experiment where 18 people from the UK will be paired up and physically handcuffed to someone they’ve never met before.
Handcuffed: Last Pair Standing is a new competition where nine pairs of contestants are chained together for the entire duration. They’ll have to live and complete all challenges while linked, but they can choose to break free at any time. However, any pair that separates is immediately eliminated and forfeits the £100,000 prize.
With Britain deeply divided, Jonathan Ross hopes this show will encourage people with very different views to connect. The show pairs people with opposing beliefs and sends them to each other’s homes, challenging them to understand what life is like from the other person’s perspective.
Who are the contestants on Handcuffed: Last Pair Standing? Let’s meet them!

Jo

Age: 39
Location: Manchester
Job: Plus size fashion brand owner
Jo participated in the Handcuffed project to challenge the idea that an autism diagnosis prevents someone from living a successful and satisfying life.
The 39-year-old woman describes her personality as energetic, thoughtful, and a bit wild. She’s matched with Reuben, whom she characterizes as reserved, focused on wellness, and well-presented.
Despite being handcuffed and taken away, Jo was surprised by how often she and her companion found themselves laughing.
She admitted she never expected to share a laugh with that person, but found the experience surprisingly pleasant.
Reuben

Age: 29
Location: Portsmouth
Job: Property developer
Reuben deliberately put himself in a very challenging situation, believing it would be an incredibly difficult mental test. Although he briefly felt anxious when first handcuffed, he quickly overcame his concerns after getting a good night’s sleep.
Looking back on his time on the show, Reuben explained that the most challenging parts were keeping up with the fast pace of walking and dealing with the uncomfortable rubbing from the cuff after hours of wear. He also found it frustrating when his partner slowed him down.
Sir Benjamin Slade

Age: 79
Location: Somerset
Job: 7th Baronet of Maunsel
During his ‘Handcuffed’ experience, Sir Benjamin Slade was matched with George and found himself having surprisingly open and honest discussions about social class.
George

Age: 60
Location: London
Job: Former prison officer
George, who described himself as practical, understanding, and energetic, wasn’t worried about the experiment. His job as a prison officer meant he was used to being close to some of Britain’s most dangerous criminals – he’d even been handcuffed to them.
He participated in the show seeking adventure, and that led him to some incredible experiences – everything from working as a topless waiter to skydiving from 15,000 feet, and even volunteering for a challenging assignment within Belmarsh prison’s high-security unit.
Tilly

Age: 37
Location: North London
Job: Barmaid
Tilly was really happy when she first met Anthony, even though he was in handcuffs. However, she had trouble sleeping because of his loud snoring.
Before the experiment began, Tilly worried she might argue with her partner. While she admits she’s skilled at arguing, she doesn’t find it pleasant.
I’m a little worried about whether we’ll click, honestly. He seems a bit high-maintenance, doesn’t he? And I’m also concerned about sleep – whether I’ll bother him if I move around, or he’ll keep me up if he snores.
Anthony

Age: 60
Location: Suffolk
Job: Business owner
Turning sixty inspired Anthony to demonstrate he was still capable of tackling any challenge.
While Tilly found something else particularly challenging, Anthony struggled most with sharing vulnerable and personal details about his life with both a stranger and a television audience.
Nina

Age: 42
Location: London
Job: Hairdresser
Nina was looking for a new experience, so she decided to try Handcuffed! She explained, “I was drawn to the idea of doing something completely different, and I actually thought it could be enjoyable.”
Nina is paired with Sara who, on first impressions, was “chatty, animated and slightly annoying”.
Sara

Age: 55
Location:Northamptonshire
Job: Mum of seven
Sara dreamed of being on TV since she was little, so when the opportunity with “Handcuffed” arose, she knew it was her big chance and decided to pursue it.
Sara found it incredibly difficult to cope with the emotional rollercoaster of being deeply involved in something, and then feeling down when things went back to normal. It was such a strong experience that it felt like she was watching herself from outside her body.
Charlie

Age: 44
Location: West Sussex
Job: Practical homemaker
At the beginning of the year, Charlie decided to be more courageous and try new things, which is why she jumped at the chance to participate in Handcuffed.
Charlie worked with Rob and discovered just how resilient she is. She realized the importance of keeping an open mind and not making assumptions about people.
Rob

Age: 32
Location: Staffordshire
Job: Adult content creator
Rob was looking for a tough mental challenge and a completely new experience, so he signed up for the show Handcuffed.
Rob was most surprised to find that people from very different backgrounds can become close friends. He explained that they were able to connect by letting go of their initial assumptions and being open to each other.
Claire

Age: 48
Location: Hampshire
Job: Horse trainer
Claire was surprisingly calm before the experiment and discovered she has a lot more patience than she thought.
She admitted she surprised herself with what she was able to accomplish. She also realized she’s been living a sheltered life and hadn’t understood how different things are for other people.
Bambi

Age: 29
Location: London
Job: Model and content creator
Like the other participants, Bambi wanted to challenge herself and demonstrate her ability to achieve anything she sets out to do.
Looking back on the experiment, Bambi says the most difficult thing was constantly having her mind racing and not being able to relax.
She explained that she struggled with not having quiet time to relax after long, busy days. Despite being energetic and outgoing, she needs moments of peace and silence to recharge. The constant social interaction, particularly with someone who was even more hyperactive than herself, became increasingly irritating as time went on.
Lin

Age: 38
Location: London
Job: Political commentator
Lin participated in the experiment because she believed it would demonstrate the importance of people with diverse backgrounds and viewpoints working together to find shared understanding.
She also emphasized the need to correct misconceptions about the political views of young people and women of color, noting that people often assume they automatically support left-wing parties like Labour or the Greens.
Frank

Age: 27
Location: Derbyshire
Job: Green party councillor
Frank is paired with Lin who he described as “spoilt, selfish, queen” on their first meeting.
Frank, like many politicians, constantly tries to persuade others, but he believes successful leadership requires empathy – genuinely trying to see things from another person’s perspective and being willing to challenge your own beliefs.
And thus, he felt Handcuffed was the only way for him to grow personally and professionally.
Bob

Age: 70
Location: Yorkshire
Job: Retired solicitor
I was really intrigued when Bob announced he was doing Handcuffed. He’s always up for a good challenge, and he said it just sounded… interesting. He described it as something totally new and experimental for him, and I could tell he was excited to try it.
Throughout the experiment, Bob realized that even easy tasks could be challenging. However, he was pleasantly surprised by how well he and Chris collaborated.
Chris

Age: 38
Location: London
Job: Youth worker
Chris found the prospect of being handcuffed to someone unlike himself, with a completely different background and way of life, really exciting.
I’ve always been fascinated by what makes people tick, and I really wanted to understand life from a different perspective. That’s what drove me to seek out new experiences and see the world through someone else’s eyes.
Morag

Age: 64
Location: Somerset
Job: School bus driver
Morag wanted to shake things up, so she signed up for the Handcuffed challenge. She was surprised by how strongly she felt during the first few days.
Angie

Age: 44
Location: Stourport
Job: Salon owner
Angie wanted to push herself beyond any limit she has known and decided to take part in Handcuffed.
She struggled with feeling powerless – not knowing what she would be doing or where she would be going.
I became extremely aware of everything around me, and in the process, I discovered a lot about myself that I didn’t know before. I really value my independence, so it was difficult for me to relinquish control. Being separated from my husband was incredibly challenging—it was the longest we’d ever been apart with absolutely no communication.
Handcuffed: Last Pair Standing will air on Monday 2 March at 9pm on Channel 4.
