As a longtime fan of the Harry Potter series, I’ve always adored Hagrid. He’s instantly lovable, but looking back, some aspects of his character just don’t quite add up. He definitely gets a lot of screen time – and that’s not surprising, really. Because of his close relationship with Harry, Ron, and Hermione, Hagrid is arguably one of the most prominent adult figures throughout the books and films.
Learning about Hagrid reveals inconsistencies in his life story. Many details, from his childhood to his role in Harry’s adventures, don’t quite make sense if you look closely. These issues are subtle and easy to miss initially, but they become apparent with further consideration.
7) That He Can Stay at Hogwarts After the Chamber of Secrets Scandal

The wizarding world operates differently from the non-magical one, but it’s hard to believe Hagrid would be allowed to stay at Hogwarts after everything that happened with the Chamber of Secrets. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, we learn that Tom Riddle falsely accused Hagrid of opening the Chamber, which resulted in Myrtle’s death. Hagrid was expelled and his wand was broken, yet he still lives on school grounds as the gamekeeper. It would be tough to keep such a serious incident a secret, and parents would probably object to him remaining there. Even with Dumbledore’s influence, this situation seems unlikely.
6) That No One Ever Caught Him Doing Illegal Magic

Okay, let’s talk about Hagrid in the early Harry Potter films. It always struck me as odd how he keeps doing little bits of magic, even after getting kicked out of school! Honestly, he’s not very subtle about it – Harry notices immediately. Sure, Dumbledore lets him use magic to deliver Harry’s letter, which is a nice exception, but you’d think the Ministry of Magic would have a problem with it. They can sense magic, and anyone could easily report Hagrid, yet he just keeps getting away with it! The most baffling part? He turns Dudley Dursley into a pig, and the kid ends up in the hospital! It just makes you wonder why the Ministry would even allow expelled wizards to keep parts of their wands in the first place – it feels like a huge oversight.
5) His Care of Magical Creatures Teaching Job

Once Hagrid is proven innocent in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, he becomes the Care of Magical Creatures teacher at Hogwarts. While it seems like a perfect job for someone who loves animals, it’s strange that he was hired without any formal teaching qualifications. We don’t know how teachers are trained in the wizarding world, so there might be a reason for it. But given how often Hagrid’s lessons put students in danger, it’s hard to understand how he continues to hold the position.
4) How Trusting He Still Is

Hagrid experiences significant hardship throughout his life, both before and during the Harry Potter stories, making his continued trust in others rather remarkable. While this quality contributes to his endearing personality, it seems unlikely he’d remain so optimistic considering everything he’s been through – being wrongly accused by Tom Riddle, witnessing the betrayal of James and Lily Potter, and facing the many terrible consequences of Voldemort’s actions. He readily trusts people, and he consistently underestimates the dangerous intentions of creatures like Aragog’s spiders, even when they threaten Harry and Ron. Considering the darkness he’s seen in both the human and wizarding worlds, he’s surprisingly naive.
3) The Fact That Dumbledore Still Trusts Him With Secrets

As a huge fan of the Harry Potter series, I’ve always found Dumbledore’s continued trust in Hagrid a little baffling. I mean, I get they’re close, but after all the accidental slip-ups, you’d think Dumbledore would be more careful about what he shares! It’s so clear in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone how Hagrid unintentionally helps Voldemort’s follower, and you’d expect that would be a wake-up call. But somehow, Hagrid still ends up being privy to some of the biggest secrets throughout the whole story, which always struck me as a bit risky.
2) Hagrid’s Relationship With Madame Maxime

I always root for Hagrid, and it’s lovely to see him with someone! He absolutely deserves happiness. But honestly, I’ve never quite understood his connection with Madame Maxime. Beyond both being half-giants, they don’t seem to share much. I get that finding someone who understands that part of your background is huge, especially when it’s so rare. Still, the story doesn’t really give us much time to see their relationship develop, and it feels a little rushed and awkward as a result.
1) His Entire Half-Giant Backstory

Hagrid’s story about being half-giant has some major flaws when you think about it. It’s difficult to imagine how a human and a giant could even have a child, and it’s also hard to picture how they would meet and fall in love, considering giants are rare and tend to keep to themselves. Plus, giants don’t usually communicate like wizards and witches do. Even if you ignore all of that, it’s still unbelievable that Hagrid and his father managed to keep his giant heritage a secret for so long.
