Harry Potter Remake’s Big Dumbledore Change Is Exactly What HBO’s TV Show Needs

HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series is expanding on the story of Albus Dumbledore, which should improve the remake. Revisiting Harry Potter is challenging because fans have strong memories of both the books and the films. The show faces a high standard, as the movies are still very popular. It’s not enough to simply be better; the series needs to offer something new and different. The show will naturally appeal to fans of the films while also aiming to be a more faithful adaptation of the original books.

As a huge fan, what I’m really hoping for is something that honors the source material but also feels fresh and new. It needs a good reason to exist alongside the books and films – a genuinely creative reason, not just a copy. And it’s exciting to hear they’re striking that balance! For example, set photos showed Dumbledore with Nicolas Flamel and his wife, Perenelle, in scenes that weren’t in the movies *or* the books. That shows they’re willing to invent new moments and explore the world in a different way, which is exactly what I want to see!

Harry Potter’s Remake Needs More Show-Only Scenes

The recent changes to the movie adaptations are staying truer to the original books. They’ve reintroduced characters that were previously left out, like Peeves and Professor Binns, and included scenes that were cut, such as the opening sequence with Vernon Dursley. One new addition, the scene with Dumbledore and Flamel, wasn’t in the books, but it expands on existing characters and storylines.

It’s natural to explore their established, warm relationship – we already know they discussed the Philosopher’s Stone in a previous book. This new story could show Dumbledore obtaining the stone, or perhaps talking to Flamel after it was destroyed. Either way, it’s a great way to build a richer world and see Dumbledore outside of his usual role at Hogwarts and with Harry, which is something we don’t often get to see.

Expanding on the characters will be key, and will also help make the most of the increased length. While there’s a lot of source material to work with, the show has more flexibility with the earlier seasons to add new scenes. The movies sometimes did this too – like Harry and Hermione’s dance in *The Deathly Hallows Part 1*, which was a memorable character-driven moment. Adding similar touches would be a great approach.

This is exactly the kind of development the remake needs. It’s not just about adding content for the sake of it; it genuinely enriches the story and characters. To justify revisiting this story in a new format, the remake needs to feel new and offer something unique, rather than simply copying the films with a few extra scenes from the books. As a fan, I’m hoping for surprises – to see unexplored ideas or even things I hadn’t considered before. There’s a real chance to both stay true to the original material and expand upon it, and the change regarding Dumbledore seems like a positive move.

A new Harry Potter television series is being made and should be available to stream on HBO and Max around 2027.
