HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter TV series is shaping up to be quite different from the books and films, and that’s actually a positive sign. The show is already making several changes, including adding the characters Nicolas and Perenelle Flamel. We’ll also see a full depiction of the night Voldemort attacked Harry’s parents, and more scenes celebrating the wizarding world’s victory over him. Expect some alterations to the Hogwarts professors and the Malfoy family as well.
Professor Binns, played by Richard Durden, was previously confirmed to appear, filling the gap left by the omission of History of Magic lessons in the films. Additionally, Johnny Flynn is set to play Lucius Malfoy in Season 1, even though he wasn’t introduced until the second book, The Chamber of Secrets. Now, we’re getting more details about both of these additions, and it clarifies why Lucius Malfoy is appearing so early. Lox Pratt, the new actor playing Draco Malfoy, recently told 1883 Magazine that filming is taking place at Malfoy Manor and will delve into the personal lives of the professors. Here’s his full statement:
As a fan, I’m really excited about this new adaptation because it expands so much beyond what the books show us. The books always focused on Harry’s perspective, which is fantastic, and thankfully, this series does that too! But the creators, Francesca and Mark, have talked about how they’re showing us more. We get glimpses into the lives of all the teachers, seeing their classrooms and daily routines, and we even get to see Draco at home! I don’t want to give anything away, but those scenes are amazing and really help you understand him as a character.
These Changes Are Good For The Harry Potter Remake

Remaking a beloved story like Harry Potter always sparks debate, especially when it comes to how closely it follows the original books. While fans will want to see elements they recognize and love, the remake also needs to be its own unique creation. It can’t just rehash what’s already been done in the books and films; it needs to offer a fresh perspective to truly stand out.
Adapting this story for television offers a fantastic opportunity to expand on the source material. The longer format allows for scenes cut from the original books to be included, and for characters and storylines to be developed more fully. This will be especially helpful in the early seasons, as the initial books are shorter – to create enough content for eight hour-long episodes, some new material will naturally be added.
Adding scenes featuring the Hogwarts professors and the Malfoys could be really beneficial. We rarely see the teachers outside of their lessons, and I’ve always been curious about their lives beyond teaching – where they live, what they do with their free time, and so on. This would be a great way to explore more of Hogwarts and uncover some hidden parts of the castle we haven’t seen yet.
The same holds true for the Malfoys. Initially, Draco is a somewhat simple antagonist, but he gains depth as the story goes on, largely due to his family. Showing this family influence earlier could make Draco a more fully realized character from the beginning, potentially adding more weight and sadness to his story. These kinds of choices allow the TV series to stand on its own while still capturing the essence of the books – which is exactly what it should do.
The Harry Potter remake is expected to debut on HBO and HBO Max in 2027.
