Lisa Niemi Swayze felt the magic when she devoured the Dirty Dancing sequel with hungry eyes.
The choreographer, who was married to Patrick Swayze for 34 years until he passed away in 2009 from pancreatic cancer, recently told Us Weekly that she had a chance to read the script and found it very touching.
She was particularly pleased that the story didn’t relegate Patrick’s character, Johnny Castle, to the sidelines. The 69-year-old writer said she’s eager to see how things develop and wishes the team all the best, noting they’ve been working on the project for some time.
And she’s not the only one ready to have the time of her life.
Jennifer Grey shared that playing Baby in ‘Dirty Dancing’ has always been very special to her, just as it is to many fans. She said this when Lionsgate announced she would be reprising the role of Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman in a new film.
The 66-year-old has been interested in what happens with the story next, but she explained it took a while to find the right team to continue the original film’s success. She wanted to be sure they could build on what had already been created.
Though she was clear that no one else could possibly fill Patrick’s jazz shoes.
The actress explained to TopMob News in 2024 that Patrick was the ideal partner for the famous lift in the movie. She said he was a skilled ballet dancer, incredibly strong, and experienced at lifting women, which made her completely trust him by the end of filming.
And she truly never felt like this before when he first boosted her up during filming.
Jennifer said doing it for the cameras just happened in the moment. ‘I didn’t practice at all,’ she explained. ‘There wasn’t time to get nervous.’
If you’re a fan of behind-the-scenes stories from the show, you’ll be happy to know this collection is full of them – it’s a real treat!

Screenwriter Eleanor Bergstein shared with Cosmopolitan in 2017 that the movie Dirty Dancing nearly had a different title – I Was a Teenage Mambo Queen. This was because Canadian border authorities initially held up the film’s early cuts, mistakenly believing it was a pornographic movie, based on its title.
Several actors, including Billy Zane, Benicio Del Toro, and Val Kilmer, were considered to play the mysterious dance instructor, Johnny Castle. Ultimately, Patrick Swayze, with his strong ballet background from the Harkness and Joffrey Ballet Schools, got the part and became a major star because of it.
Despite the role being perfect for him, Patrick Swayze almost didn’t take the part in Dirty Dancing. He’d suffered a severe knee injury during his time on Broadway, and was even listing ‘no dancing’ on his work history.
Before Jennifer Grey landed the role of Baby, both Sarah Jessica Parker and Winona Ryder tried out for the part. Grey later shared with The New York Times that she earned $50,000 for her work in the film.

Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE this! Even though Jennifer Grey had already worked with Patrick Swayze in Red Dawn, she was absolutely terrified to dance with him! Can you imagine? Terrified! It’s just…amazing to think about, considering their chemistry later on. She actually said she was scared! I’ve read it a million times and it still gets me!
You know, working with Patrick Swayze was incredible. As I reflected a few years ago, he was just a phenomenal dancer, and honestly, completely fearless. It was such a fascinating dynamic because we were total opposites! He would throw himself into anything, while I tended to be more cautious. It was almost like our backgrounds played into it – he didn’t come from a Jewish background like I did – and that contrast created a really special, almost marital, connection. We balanced each other out beautifully.
At first, the two main actors didn’t get along easily. They frequently disagreed about how to approach their performances.
Let me tell you, working with my co-star could be a real rollercoaster. She was incredibly sensitive – a little criticism could easily bring her to tears. But then, completely out of the blue, she’d get these fits of giggles, which, as fun as it was, meant we had to reshoot scenes again and again! It was all part of the experience, as I wrote about in my book, The Time of My Life.
Choreographer Kenny Ortega drew inspiration from the real-life relationship between the actors to create the believable chemistry between Johnny and Baby in the film.
In 2017, Ortega told People magazine that the two of them always brought a lot of energy to every situation. Sometimes that energy was expressed as conflict, and other times as love. There was an undeniable connection between them—they were like a captivating display of fireworks.

The film’s famous lift scene in the lake proved to be a key moment for Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, bringing them closer together as they worked through the challenging sequence.
In his autobiography, Swayze described the lake as shockingly cold and explained they filmed the scene many times. He wrote that even though Jennifer Grey was petite, lifting someone in the water made her feel incredibly heavy – like she weighed 500 pounds.
All their effort paid off. In her 2022 memoir, Out of the Corner, Grey explained that she deliberately waited to perform the famous lift until filming the very last dance scene with Swayze.
She explained that the connection between them in that moment was genuine. It was filled with true thankfulness, deep respect, and sincere care. She questioned, “If that isn’t love, then what is?”
The now-famous scene where Baby laughs as Johnny gently runs his fingers down her arm happened spontaneously. Grey was genuinely ticklish, and Swayze’s frustrated reaction was completely authentic.
Bergstein explained to Cosmo that they’d filmed a scene where the actress didn’t laugh, and completely forgot about the original take. It was only during editing, when their dance editor discovered it, that they remembered. Everyone – including Jennifer and Patrick – found the forgotten footage hilarious, and they decided to include it because it was so funny.

The role of Baby’s mother was first given to Lynne Lipton, but Kelly Bishop took over after Lipton got sick during the first week of filming. Bishop was originally cast as Vivian Pressman, a guest at the resort who was interested in Johnny. Miranda Garrison, who was an assistant choreographer on the film, then played Vivian instead.
Originally, sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer was going to play the role of Mrs. Schumacher. However, she decided not to take the part after finding out her character was the one stealing from the resort.
Producers asked Bergstein to remove Penny’s abortion storyline to attract a corporate sponsor, but she wouldn’t agree.
The writer admitted they’d always expected this outcome. They’d previously warned that removing a key element would ruin the entire story, causing it to collapse and lose all meaning. However, the others responded that it should have been considered earlier, and ultimately, they decided against making the change.
Bergstein says that after seeing the first version of the movie, several producers weren’t confident it would succeed.
In a 2017 interview with Today, she said producer Aaron Ross instructed them to destroy the original film and claim insurance money. She also recalled people repeatedly dismissing the film as worthless.

Oh my gosh, the soundtrack! It was number one on Billboard for over four months – can you believe it?! And it’s sold over 14 million copies! I practically wore the cassette out! But the best part? “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” won an Oscar! I knew it would, it’s just… perfect. Seriously, I still get chills every time I hear it. It’s more than just a song, it’s a moment.
Jane Brucker, who played Lisa – Baby’s somewhat ditzy older sister – actually wrote and performed the song “Hula Hana” during the talent show rehearsal scene in the movie.
Patrick Swayze co-wrote and performed “She’s Like the Wind,” but it wasn’t initially for Dirty Dancing. He first wrote it for the soundtrack of his 1984 comedy, Grandview, U.S.A. Rob Lowe shared in a 2020 interview on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast that Swayze also tried to include the song in their 1986 film, Youngbloods.
Matthew Broderick, who was dating Jennifer Grey during filming, appears briefly and without credit in the last scene as a member of the audience at the talent show.

18. Dirty Dancing became the first film to sell more than a million copies for home video.
As a huge fan, I was thrilled when Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights came out in 2004, giving us a look at the story’s origins! And then, in 2015, they did a TV remake with Abigail Breslin playing Baby – it was so fun to see a new take on the classic.
In 2020, TopMob News reported that Jennifer Grey would be both producing and starring in a remake of Dirty Dancing. While the story wasn’t shared, Grey did confirm she would reprise her role as Baby.
She explained to The Los Angeles Times that she was fascinated by reimagining the story three decades later, set in the 1990s. She wanted to explore what became of the original character and how the story’s meaning would change when viewed with fresh eyes and in a new context.
