Hayden Panettiere‘s motherhood journey started off with a harrowing experience.
In 2014, the singer nearly died from severe blood loss while giving birth to her daughter, Kaya, with her then-fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko.
In an interview with TopMob News about her upcoming memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, Hayden shared a harrowing experience from her C-section. She described feeling as though she was facing death, but in that moment, her biggest concern was for her daughter. ‘I just prayed to hear her cry, to know she was alright,’ she explained. ‘If it was my time to go, I could accept that, as long as she was okay.’
Though Hayden faced a life-threatening experience – needing seven blood transfusions and battling an infection – it strengthened her desire to be a mother. She explained that she would instantly put her daughter Kaya’s needs before her own, even at the cost of her own life.
Hayden added, “I wasn’t afraid at all.”
Hayden’s experience with postpartum depression made being a mother to Kaya in her early years very difficult. Eventually, she made the difficult decision to give up custody of Kaya in 2018, allowing the four-year-old to live with Wladimir in Europe while Hayden focused on getting better.
Hayden hopes his partner never blames herself for experiencing postpartum depression. He wants her to understand that it’s okay to not be perfect, and to know she’s not alone in her challenges. He also wants her to feel empowered to speak up and get help, rather than suffering in silence like he did.

The Scream VI actress shared that she regularly checks in with herself and makes sure she’s surrounded by supportive, positive people, like Kaya, who help her be her best.
Hayden explained they weren’t ready to say they’d fully moved on, as they’re still working through their feelings and experiences. They’ve expressed these emotions through writing, and hope sharing them will be helpful to others.
