HBO Max Is About To Lose an Underrated Reboot of a ‘70s Sci-Fi Classic (& There’s a New TV Series on the Way)

This decade helped transform sci-fi from a small, specialized interest into a popular mainstream genre. The ’70s brought us thought-provoking, big-budget films and successful sci-fi TV shows like Battlestar Galactica and The Six Million Dollar Man. Now, one of the most memorable shows from that era is getting a new TV series after 50 years, though viewers on HBO Max don’t have much time left to watch the often-overlooked movie remake.

The 2009 comedy film Land of the Lost, a remake of the classic 1970s TV series, will be removed from HBO Max on March 31st. Starring Will Ferrell, Anna Friel, and Danny McBride, the movie follows a scientist and his team who are transported to a strange prehistoric world. They must battle dinosaurs and other creatures while trying to find a way back home. This removal comes before Netflix releases its own new TV series based on the original show, which doesn’t have a release date yet.

Land of the Lost Is Chaotic Prehistoric Fun

The Land of the Lost movie didn’t recapture the charm of the original TV series. While the show was a wholesome adventure for families, the film went for a more over-the-top, adult-focused comedy, drastically changing characters like Rick – who went from a dependable dad to a self-centered and discredited scientist. This new approach didn’t initially resonate with audiences, earning it a Golden Raspberry award and low scores on Rotten Tomatoes (27% critics, 32% audience). However, despite its flaws, Land of the Lost is undeniably a silly and enjoyably bad comedy.

This movie is a wildly fun and unrestrained comedy that fully embraces its silly side. Will Ferrell and Danny McBride have fantastic chemistry, creating non-stop, fast-paced, and often outrageous humor, with plenty of surreal moments. It playfully pokes fun at the original film and the sci-fi genre with intentionally cheesy special effects and sets, bringing a vibrant and chaotic prehistoric world to life, complete with memorable creatures like Grumpy the T-Rex and Cha-Ka. While the plot isn’t perfect, Land of the Lost is a bizarre, lighthearted, and genuinely funny comedy that’s worth checking out if you’re in the mood for a laugh.

Where to Stream Land of the Lost After It Leaves HBO Max

If you’re a fan of the movie Land of the Lost, you might want to watch it soon! It looks like it may be leaving HBO Max and becoming unavailable for streaming.
