Most movie sequels don’t live up to the original, but occasionally one comes along that’s just as good, or even better. Throughout film history, very few sequels have actually surpassed their predecessors. In fact, one excellent sequel is currently available to stream on HBO Max, even though the first movie isn’t.
As a huge movie fan, I was absolutely charmed when Paddington Bear came to life on screen in 2014 – it was an instant family favorite! And then, just three years later, Paddington 2 arrived, and honestly, it’s one of the best sequels ever made, maybe the best. I was thrilled to see it landed on HBO Max on February 27th. If you’re new to Paddington’s adventures, though, you can only start with the second film right now. Sadly, the first Paddington movie and the newest installment, Paddington in Peru, aren’t currently available on the streaming service.
Paddington 2 Is a Near-Perfect Family Film
It’s difficult to believe, but Paddington 2 is even better than the already fantastic original Paddington. The first movie is considered one of the best family films ever made, praised for its high quality and touching story about belonging – it earned a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, Paddington 2 somehow surpassed it, achieving an incredible 99% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This sequel builds on the original’s charm as Paddington adjusts to life with the Brown family, and follows a thrilling adventure when he’s mistakenly sent to jail for a crime he didn’t commit – stealing a present for his Aunt Lucy.
Paddington 2 is a delightful sequel that expertly balances humor, heart, and charm. It’s a truly exceptional film – so much so that it’s comparable in quality to a classic like The Godfather Part II. It surpasses the original in every aspect, boasting a tighter, more emotionally resonant story and a brilliant performance from Hugh Grant as the villain, Phoenix Buchanan, who is both funnier and more captivating than before. The visuals are also a step up, with a bright, whimsical style reminiscent of Wes Anderson, and a particularly memorable scene within a pop-up book. Overall, it’s a fantastic sequel that appeals to a wide audience.
What’s New on HBO Max?
February is wrapping up on HBO Max with the addition of Paddington 2, completing a month of great movie releases. Subscribers can now enjoy a variety of films, including family favorites like Ferdinand, Hop, and Life of Pi, alongside titles such as The Notebook, The Shape of Water, and The Pope’s Exorcist.
