Since it began in 2001, Adult Swim on Cartoon Network has given us many memorable shows. From early favorites like Home Movies and Space Ghost Coast To Coast to recent hits such as Rick and Morty and Primal, the late-night block has consistently provided great entertainment. Another popular Adult Swim series recently finished its three-season run, and the last two episodes are now available on HBO Max.
The animated series Smiling Friends, created by Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack, has concluded. The final two episodes, “Friend Bot” and “Charlie’s Uncle Dies and Doesn’t Come Back,” aired on Adult Swim on April 12th and are now available on HBO Max, bringing the total number of episodes to 27. The show, which began in 2020, follows the staff of a company whose job is to bring happiness to people, mainly focusing on the adventures of Charlie, a pessimist, and Pim, an optimist, as they tackle strange and unusual situations to cheer up their clients.
Smiling Friends Is One of Adult Swim’s Best Modern Shows
Despite being a newer show on Adult Swim, Smiling Friends has quickly become one of their best. With a 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes over three seasons, the series is a wild, dreamlike experience. It mixes over-the-top, unpredictable situations with surprisingly touching moments and clever observations about today’s world. Known for its fast-paced jokes and wonderfully bizarre humor, Smiling Friends also stands out visually thanks to its unique animation style – a blend of traditional techniques, computer graphics, stop-motion, and even live-action.
Fans may be disappointed to hear that Smiling Friends will conclude after its third season. Creators Cusack and Hadel announced this decision in February, explaining they wanted to end the show while it was still strong and avoid it going on for too long. Season 3 has continued the show’s success, receiving high praise (a 91% score on Popcornmeter) and concluding with a typical, bizarre, self-aware, and emotionally impactful finale that leaves viewers with a satisfying ending.
What’s New on HBO Max?
HBO Max is adding a lot of great content in April! Fans can enjoy nearly the entire Alien series, plus movies like Maze Runner: The Death Cure, Practical Magic, The Devil Wears Prada, The Mummy, and Twister. The fifth and final season of Hacks is also now available. Keep an eye out for even more new titles arriving later in the month, including Dust Bunny on April 17th and Marty Supreme from A24 on April 24th.
