Critics have called this classic horror film a “masterpiece” and “one of the greatest achievements” in the genre. It’s about to leave HBO Max, but its impact endures. Horror movies have become incredibly popular over the decades, moving from a small niche to a major force in entertainment, and this 90-year-old film—with a 98
If you’re an HBO Max subscriber, you only have a short time left to watch The Bride of Frankenstein, the 1935 sequel to the original Frankenstein. Starring Boris Karloff, Colin Clive, and Elsa Lanchester, the movie follows Dr. Frankenstein as he’s pressured into building a companion for his Monster. It arrived on HBO Max in November, but it will be removed from the service on December 31st.
The Bride of Frankenstein Was a Pivotal Film for the Horror Genre
It’s hard to overstate how influential The Bride of Frankenstein has been, and continues to be, on the horror genre. This 1935 film laid the groundwork for much of what we enjoy in horror today. Beyond its iconic visuals and perfect ending, it demonstrated that horror could be more than just frightening—it could explore deep emotions, dark humor, tragedy, and even philosophical ideas, all of which could enhance the genre. Furthermore, the film essentially created the blueprint for modern horror franchises, expanding the Frankenstein story in a way that proved sequels could actually be better than the original.
This classic horror film continues to be highly regarded nearly 90 years after its release, and is still considered one of the greatest sequels of all time. It has had a lasting impact on the horror genre, inspiring numerous films over the years, including the upcoming movie The Bride! directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Starring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, The Bride! is a new take on the monster story and is set to be released in theaters on March 6, 2026.
Where to Stream The Bride of Frankenstein After It Leaves HBO Max?
For many horror fans, The Bride of Frankenstein is a must-see classic, which makes it frustrating that it’s often hard to find on streaming services. Universal Monster movies frequently appear and disappear from different platforms, and it looks like The Bride of Frankenstein is about to become unavailable again. Currently, it’s only streaming on HBO Max, and it wasn’t listed in any streaming service updates for January 2026. Once it leaves HBO Max on December 31st, your only options to watch it will be by buying a physical copy or renting or purchasing it digitally.
