HBO Max is adding a lot of new shows and movies this November, but one recent comic book sequel is likely to disappoint fans of the first film. While comic book movies have been incredibly popular and profitable in Hollywood for years, not every adaptation succeeds. A 2017 sequel, in particular, didn’t live up to the quality of the original.
You can now watch Kingsman: The Golden Circle on HBO Max. This sequel to the popular 2014 film Kingsman: The Secret Service, directed by Matthew Vaughn, became available on November 1st. Based on the Kingsman comic book series by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbon, the movie follows the Kingsman secret spy organization as they join forces with the American Statesman agency to defeat the villainous Poppy Adams and her drug cartel. The film stars returning cast members including Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Mark Strong, Sophie Cookson, Edward Holcroft, and Hanna Alström.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle Is an Overstuffed Disappointment
Despite having all the potential for success – a popular first film, big-name stars, and a larger budget – Kingsman: The Golden Circle was a disappointment, proving that a bigger production doesn’t automatically mean a better one. The movie felt crammed with too many elements, and while it added talented actors like Julianne Moore and Jeff Bridges, the large cast ended up feeling overcrowded. Many actors had limited screen time and lacked meaningful roles, which led to a confusing and tiring story with too much happening at once. As a result, characters weren’t well-developed and the film lacked emotional depth.
While The Golden Circle earned a solid $410 million at the box office on a $104 million budget – almost matching the original’s success – it didn’t impress critics or live up to expectations. Its 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes was significantly lower than the first film’s “Certified Fresh” rating. Audience scores were a bit better at 65%, but still a noticeable drop from the original’s 84%.
What’s New on HBO Max?
You can now watch Kingsman: The Golden Circle on HBO Max! November brought a lot of new titles to the service, including films like Dangerous Liaisons, House of 1000 Corpses, Sucker Punch, The Devil’s Rejects, and Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo. Plus, HBO Max has added some holiday favorites just in time for Christmas, like Elf, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and The Polar Express.
