HBO is known for its popular and highly-rated comedies, and its newest hit is proving to be no different. The award-winning show will be back for a fifth season, which will be its last.
Before its season three premiere on April 9th, Hacks received positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. However, its score is lower than the almost perfect scores of its earlier seasons, marking a new low for the series.
Hacks Continues to Be a Hit With Critics
The show started with an 88% approval rating based on nine reviews, and it’s now at 90% with ten reviews. This is a very positive score, especially for a popular series, though it’s a little lower than previous seasons. The first two seasons both received perfect 100% scores, and seasons three and four were close behind at 98%.
Currently, Hacks Season 5 has received only one negative review. If future reviews are similar, the show could maintain its impressive “Certified Fresh” rating of 98%. The series as a whole still enjoys a fantastic 97% score, which is slightly down from the 99% it had before Season 5’s reviews were factored in.
Brian Tallerico at RogerEbert.com praised the latest season of Hacks, calling it consistently smart and funny since its debut in 2021 and predicting it will remain that way. He believes the final season, which focuses on Deborah Vance’s legacy, is a near-perfect conclusion to an outstanding show.
Abe Friedtanzer from Awards Buzz also gave the show high marks, noting that throughout its five seasons, Hacks has consistently maintained its quality and humor. He believes the final episodes are as strong as ever, effectively concluding a significant and successful comedy series.
According to Alise Chaffins of MacGuffin or Meaning, the final season of the show is among its strongest, showcasing excellent work from both the writers and the actors.
The only criticism comes from Angie Han at The Hollywood Reporter, who believes the show Hacks was strongest when it explored the complex dynamic between its main characters and the harsh realities of the entertainment industry. She feels the latest season is too gentle and pleasant, losing the sharp edge that made it compelling.
Hacks Season 5 Will Be the Last
With just over two weeks until the new season of Hacks premieres, HBO has officially confirmed it will be the show’s last. While many fans will be disappointed given the show’s popularity and potential for more seasons, this ending was planned from the beginning.
Jen Statsky, Paul W. Downs, and Lucia Aniello have revealed the show will definitely have an ending. After the Season 4 finale in May 2025, Downs hinted they’d been planning the final scene since 2015, but weren’t sure if they’d have enough episodes to reach it. Now, they’ve figured out a way to bring the story to a conclusion.
I was chatting with the star of Hacks on the Emmys red carpet, and she let slip that they’re starting filming for the final season next week! She said it feels a little sad knowing it’s the end, but she also thinks it’s the right decision. It’s definitely going to be a different vibe on set, she mentioned.
Hacks Season 5 debuts on HBO and HBO Max on Apr. 9.
