HBO is generating excitement for its upcoming new take on Harry Potter with a TV series. Warner Bros. Discovery has been sharing details about the show and introducing the actors. In a surprising move, the series has been renewed for a second season before the first season has even aired, though there will be a change in leadership for the new season.
Warner Bros. Discovery has approved a second season of the Harry Potter series, and production is scheduled to start this fall. There’s also a change happening with the creative team: Jon Brown, a writer from the first season (Succession), will now be a co-showrunner alongside Francesca Gardiner, who led the first season.
Everything We Know About Harry Potter Season 2
Surprisingly, season 2 of the new Harry Potter series will begin filming before season 1 even airs this Christmas. While season 1 is still being filmed and expected to wrap up in just a few weeks, the quick turnaround is intentional. This accelerated schedule allows plenty of time for editing and special effects, and also helps accommodate the show’s growing young actors.
The first season is titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. While the second season’s title hasn’t been announced, it will probably be Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, matching the name of the second book in the series.
Gardiner stated that the decision to promote Brown to co-showrunner was largely due to the need for faster production. He explained that with plans to finish the first season by Christmas and start the second season this fall, adding a co-showrunner was essential to keep things moving at a good pace.
Gardiner shared their appreciation for Jon, noting a strong working relationship since they first met on ‘Succession’ and continuing through their recent collaboration on ‘Harry Potter’. They praised Jon’s writing talent, his collaborative spirit, and his kind personality, adding that he’s a valuable asset to any team.
As a critic, I’ve been following ‘Philosopher’s Stone’ closely, and I’m thrilled to hear Brown will be co-showrunning alongside Francesca. He clearly loves the project – he described writing for it as a ‘joy’ and expressed gratitude to Francesca and HBO for trusting him to keep the story going. It’s a charming sentiment, and he even joked about finally getting his Hogwarts letter, which I think perfectly captures the show’s enduring magic.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is set to release on HBO on December 25, 2026.
