HBO’s new Harry Potter series will likely differ from previous adaptations in several ways. Interestingly, a scene invented for the very first Harry Potter movie was actually cut before its release. The upcoming TV show, however, will primarily feature moments directly from the Harry Potter books, or entirely new scenes created specifically for the series.
The recent HBO trailer for Harry Potter included scenes not found in the first movie, Sorcerer’s Stone. Most of these new scenes come from moments described in J.K. Rowling’s original book, such as the snowball fights, which will also be shown in the TV series.
Interestingly, a scene originally filmed for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is making its debut in a theatrical release. The scene features Nick Frost, who plays Rubeus Hagrid in the new HBO Harry Potter series, standing inside a London Underground train carriage.
HBO’s Harry Potter Features A Scene With Harry And Hagrid On The London Underground
To show Harry’s trip to The Leaky Cauldron and Diagon Alley, the new HBO series features Hagrid accompanying him on the London Underground. The show depicts Hagrid telling young Harry about his parents, but the most striking part of the scene is seeing Hagrid – a magical being – in the everyday world of Muggles.
HBO’s new documentary, Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic, reveals that the costume designers aimed to create a believable look for the show’s magical characters, making them seem like they could be real people. The series’ writers and producers apparently shared this goal when they included a particular scene.
Seeing Harry and Hagrid ride the London Underground shows us how they traveled from the Dursleys’ isolated home – where they were trying to avoid Hogwarts letters – to Diagon Alley. Since they couldn’t magically appear instantly, they needed to use ordinary transportation at some point, and this scene depicts that journey.
This Scene Was Cut From The Movie Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone
Interestingly, a very similar scene was filmed for the first Harry Potter movie, but it was ultimately left out. The new Harry Potter TV series is bringing this lost scene to life, both as a tribute to the original film and to show us how Hagrid interacts with the non-magical world.
The scene originally showed Harry asking Hagrid about the school supplies he needed for Hogwarts. Hagrid then started talking about his dream of owning a dragon, calling them “vastly misunderstood beasts” – a phrase that would become well-known throughout the series.
The Hogwarts groundskeeper, a very large man, was relieved the Underground carriage wasn’t crowded, giving him space to sit comfortably. Despite this, a woman across from him glared at him before going back to reading her newspaper.
Harry’s Underground Scene With Hagrid Isn’t In The Book
Similar to how Harry’s quidditch jersey number was changed in the films, the scene with Harry and Hagrid on the London Underground isn’t found in J.K. Rowling’s books. The novels only mention they took the Underground and that Hagrid had trouble with the ticket gates – we don’t actually see the journey happen.
While traveling to London by train, Harry reviews his Hogwarts supply list from his acceptance letter. At the same time, Hagrid shares his lifelong dream of having a dragon as they walk to the train station.
Additionally, the movie’s Underground scene directly uses lines from the book but presents them in a new context. However, the TV version of this scene features Hagrid describing Harry’s parents as “funny and clever” people who “stood up for what they believed was right”—details not found in the original book.
While this information is already established in the Harry Potter books, this is the first time we’ve heard Hagrid say it in the HBO series. The show is breathing new life into the story, and this scene proves the creators aren’t afraid to put their own spin on things.
