Even though He-Man and the Masters of the Universe first appeared in video games over 40 years ago, there haven’t been many games based on the franchise. However, you can still find excellent condition copies of the original Masters of the Universe: The Power of He-Man game for sale on eBay – but be prepared to spend a lot of money.
The video game Masters of the Universe: The Power of He-Man came out for Intellivision in November 1983 and Atari 2600 in December 1983. Although you can find used copies fairly cheaply, unopened, new copies are quite valuable – ranging from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. A big reason for this high price is that the original Masters of the Universe comic book was included with the game when it was first sold. Games sold without the comic generally cost much less.
Masters of the Universe: The Power of He-Man Auction History, Explained
Very few pristine, professionally graded copies of Masters of the Universe: The Power of He-Man have been sold through Heritage Auctions, a site for serious collectors. The most expensive copy sold there was a near-mint 9.4 grade, fetching $10,200 in 2022. Nineteen other copies of The Power of He-Man have sold for between $1,200 and $7,800, alongside additional copies with lower grades that are priced similarly to what you’d find on eBay.
When The Power of He-Man game first came out, the Masters of the Universe franchise was still new, and video games weren’t advanced enough to fully recreate its fantastical world. Surprisingly, the game’s opening section plays a lot like the old arcade game Defender, with He-Man flying his Wind Raider and fighting generic enemies both in the air and on land.

Later in the game, players finally get to control He-Man as he battles Skeletor. The gameplay is similar to classic arcade games like Breakout and Tron. A neat feature lets He-Man deflect Skeletor’s attacks with his power sword if timed correctly. However, instead of a big showdown, the game ends when He-Man reaches Skeletor just as the theme song from the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon plays alongside an image of He-Man himself. After that, the game simply starts over.
The new video game, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction, looks like it will finally capture the feel of the original cartoon series. Developed by Bitmap Bureau, it’s a classic 2D beat ’em up where players can control He-Man, Teela, Man-At-Arms, and She-Ra as they fight Skeletor’s army across Eternia. Originally planned for an April release by Limited Run, the game has been delayed, and a new release date hasn’t been announced yet.
