Heartstopper movie confirms British TV favourite in recast for Nick’s mum after Olivia Colman drops out film

With the upcoming movie Heartstopper Forever bringing Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick’s (Kit Connor) story to a close, Netflix has announced that two well-known British actors will be joining the cast.

Anna Maxwell Martin, known for her role in Motherland, will now play Nick’s mother, Sarah, taking over from Olivia Colman. Colman wasn’t available for season 3 of Heartstopper due to other commitments, and won’t be appearing in the upcoming film either.

Meanwhile, Derek Jacobi is set to appear in a cameo role, with the details yet to be announced.

Alice Oseman, the author, explained to Tudum that Sarah needed to reappear in the final season. Although they managed to avoid showing her in Season 3, her absence wouldn’t make sense considering the emotional challenges Nick was going through.

Unfortunately, Olivia Colman couldn’t continue with the film, so we had to recast the role instead of removing the character altogether. We’re incredibly thankful for Olivia’s wonderful portrayal of Sarah in the first two seasons of Heartstopper, including memorable scenes like Nick coming out as bisexual, and we know fans will always cherish her performance.

We’re thrilled to announce that Anna Maxwell Martin will be joining the cast of Heartstopper Forever as Sarah!

As a huge Heartstopper fan, I was on set and I have to say, Anna nailed Sarah’s vibe – she’s just so sweet and real. Watching her act with Kit was honestly magical! I’m seriously excited for everyone to see what she’s done with the role of Sarah Nelson – I think fans are going to absolutely love it.

Martin is an actress known for her roles in popular shows like Line of Duty (as DCS Patricia Carmichael), Motherland (as Julia Johnstone), and Good Omens (as Beelzebub). She will soon star as Lyudmilla Raskova in the new spin-off of For All Mankind, called Star City.

Jacobi has enjoyed a diverse acting career, appearing in well-known productions like I, Claudius, Cadfael, Gladiator, and The King’s Speech, both on television, in film, and on stage.

Heartstopper Forever is the final installment of the popular Netflix series, which tells the heartwarming story of Nick and Charlie’s relationship, based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novels.

The film centers on a couple dealing with the challenges of being apart – Nick is getting ready for college, while Charlie is discovering more freedom at school.

Hearstopper Forever is set to be released this year.
