Hit Thriller With Millions of Views on Netflix Has a Sequel That’s Stuck Without a Release Date

As a huge fan, I’ve been eagerly awaiting *The Batman Part II*, and it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster! It’s tough making a sequel, even to a big hit, and Warner Bros. Discovery has been working on this one for a while now. Apparently, it took Matt Reeves a couple of years to nail down the story, and finally, the script is in! But it’s not just about the script, you know? Things like getting everyone’s schedules to line up and other issues behind the scenes can really slow things down. Still, it’s pretty rare for a movie to actually finish filming and *then* get cancelled – that would be awful!

The sequel to the critically acclaimed film *Wind River*, titled *Wind River: The Next Chapter*, is currently facing uncertainty. The original *Wind River* received widespread praise and did well in theaters, making a follow-up seem likely. However, despite being finished in 2023, the sequel is currently on hold. Its best chance of being released now depends on a streaming service recognizing the continued popularity of the first film and deciding to pick it up.

Wind River: The New Chapter Would’ve Been Different Than the First Movie

The film *Wind River* stands out because of its compelling story and unusual setting. Instead of taking place in a typical city or town, the mystery unfolds on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. The residents have little faith in the government’s support, but two agents-played by Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen-try to find justice after a disturbing murder. As they investigate, they confront difficult truths and are deeply affected by what they discover. Ultimately, they succeed in their mission but go their separate ways.

The new installment, currently titled *The New Chapter*, focuses on the aftermath for the main characters, exploring what happens when they return home. When a series of ritualistic murders begin on the reservation, a new team of investigators takes charge. This time, neither Jeremy Renner nor Elizabeth Olsen will be returning to their roles; instead, Martin Sensmeier and Jason Clarke join the cast. Taylor Sheridan is not involved in this production, with Kari Skogland directing a script written by Patrick Massett and John Zinman. Sheridan’s absence may be contributing to the slow pace of the film’s release, but strong streaming numbers for *Wind River* could change that.

Wind River Is a Major Hit on Streaming

It’s common for movies to become popular on streaming services, particularly Netflix. But despite competing with big titles like *KPop Demon Hunters* and the *Shrek* movies, *Wind River* has made it into the platform’s Top 10. With so many people watching, the possibility of a sequel is hard to miss. While it’s true the original stars and director aren’t returning, the core story remains strong, and *The New Chapter* will continue that narrative.

It’s uncertain if *The New Chapter* will ever be released, but it likely won’t stay unreleased for much longer. With the success of the first movie, streaming services like Netflix might become interested in acquiring the rights and continuing the story.

Wind River is streaming on Netflix.
