Home Alone legend reveals why he thinks third film with Macaulay Culkin should never happen

For quite some time now, enthusiasts of the movie “Home Alone” have been clamoring for Macaulay Culkin to resurrect his character, Kevin McCallister, in a potential new sequel. However, the film’s director, Chris Columbus, has voiced his opposition to this notion.

Regarding a potential reboot of the franchise, the director who directed the original Home Alone movie and its sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, recently shared his thoughts with ET, stating, “I believe Home Alone represents a unique, special moment in time, and it’s challenging to recreate that essence.

He added: “It seems erroneous to attempt to replicate something we achieved 35 years ago. I believe we should just let it be.

Following Macaulay Culkin’s departure from the Home Alone series after the second movie, “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York”, other lead actors took over the role for subsequent films such as “Home Alone 3” released in 1997, “Home Alone 4” in 2002, “Home Alone: The Holiday Heist” in 2012, and most recently, “Home Sweet Home Alone” in 2021.

2018 saw Ryan Reynolds taking on a producing role for the movie titled Stoned Alone, initially marketed as a follow-up to the mature-themed original film. However, due to complications during production, the project found itself in a state of prolonged delay and stagnation – a situation often referred to as development hell.

In an earlier announcement, it was described that the story revolves around a slacker in his twenties, involved in growing marijuana, who unfortunately misses his vacation ski trip.

Later on, Columbus expressed his viewpoint to The Independent: “To me, these reboots are simply preposterous. When I heard they were planning something like ‘Stoned Alone,’ a R-rated Home Alone movie featuring stoners, I couldn’t help but think, ‘This is nothing more than an affront to the very essence of cinema’.
