Season 3 of House of the Dragon promises to be intense, and it will significantly impact the character of Rhaenyra Targaryen. Emma D’Aarcy, who plays Rhaenyra, has been central to the HBO Game of Thrones spin-off for two seasons, and will continue to be. But as the new season (premiering June 21, 2026) focuses on the core events of the Dance of the Dragons, Rhaenyra’s beliefs and principles will have to evolve.
In a recent interview with EW, D’Arcy spoke about how their character, Rhaenyra, will evolve in season 3 of House of the Dragon. They hinted that the new episodes will place Rhaenyra in a different and challenging situation. The season begins with the Battle of Gullet, a famously brutal naval battle in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire universe. This intense conflict will shift the focus of the war between the Blacks and Greens, and D’Arcy was excited to explore what this means for Rhaenyra’s journey.
Rhaenyra has mostly been responding to events rather than driving them. For the first two seasons, she was often on the defensive, just trying to hold onto her power. I’ve expressed a hope that she’ll become more proactive and take charge, and I’m eager to see what happens when she no longer feels the need to constantly justify herself.
What D’Arcy said about Rhaenyra in the first two seasons of House of the Dragon makes a lot of sense. Rhaenyra has spent most of her time at Dragonstone, making political moves but always seeming hesitant. This is a departure from how she’s portrayed in the book Fire & Blood, and it looks like season 3 of House of the Dragon will change her actions to match the version of events remembered in Westerosi history.
What Causes Rhaenyra Targaryen To Change In House Of The Dragon Season 3
So far, House of the Dragon has shown Rhaenyra as a good and just leader who’s trying to secure her claim to the throne peacefully. However, in George R.R. Martin’s books, she’s depicted as more troubled – cruel, worried, and suspicious. The show suggests Rhaenyra wasn’t always like that, and that stories of her cruelty were spread by her enemies. But actress Emma D’Arcy has revealed that season 3 will show Rhaenyra becoming more authoritarian and potentially tyrannical.
D’Arcy suggests that Rhaenyra’s commitment to the prophecy her father told her is becoming almost like a religious obsession, pushing her to take increasingly extreme positions. Though not deeply religious like Alicent Hightower, Rhaenyra firmly believes she’s destined to be queen and protect the prophecy of Aegon the Conqueror. By the end of House of the Dragon season 2, Rhaenyra feels a strong sense of urgency, but hasn’t yet become completely fanatical. However, the situation is likely to worsen, driving her to even more desperate measures.
Although Rhaenyra does become a tyrannical ruler in the original story (things worsen for her after taking King’s Landing), the idea that her father asked her to protect Aegon’s Prophecy was created for the show, House of the Dragon. The series is significantly changing things, and it remains to be seen if these changes will be worth it.
Rhaenyra’s House Of The Dragon Arc Is Starting To Sound Very Familiar
D’Arcy suggests Rhaenyra’s strong conviction that she must be queen – and share the prophecy about Aegon – could ultimately lead her to become a tyrant. This fits with a pattern in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, where unwavering belief often leads characters astray. However, this path for Rhaenyra could frustrate viewers of House of the Dragon, as it mirrors the controversial ending of Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones.
Daenerys began as a just leader, wanting to create peace for her people. But in HBO’s Game of Thrones, her conviction that she was meant to save them ultimately led her down a destructive path, causing her to become violent and oppressive – all while believing she was doing the right thing. Similarly, Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon may not see herself as a prophesied savior, but she’s equally convinced of her own destined path. Both women share a strong belief in their own fate, making them remarkably alike.
Even though we know the general outline of Rhaenyra’s story, House of the Dragon isn’t bound to follow it exactly – the show has already shown it’s willing to deviate. That means almost anything could happen as the series goes on. D’Arcy Carden hinted at a turn towards tyranny for Rhaenyra, but it’s possible that storyline could take a different direction, perhaps even leading to her finding redemption before the end. We’ll have to wait and see how things unfold.
