Season 3 of House of the Dragon will significantly escalate the fight for the Iron Throne, and will draw inspiration from some of the most debated parts of Daenerys Targaryen’s storyline in Game of Thrones. The ending of Daenerys’ arc—where she became known as the “Mad Queen,” destroyed King’s Landing, and ultimately lost the throne and her life—remains controversial with fans to this day.
While House of the Dragon has faced some criticism, it hasn’t yet experienced the intense negative reaction that Game of Thrones Season 8 did. The show’s second season proved somewhat controversial, even drawing criticism from author George R.R. Martin regarding changes made from his book, Fire & Blood, and how those changes might impact the story. Some viewers also felt the season lacked sufficient action, a problem the upcoming Season 3 seems determined to fix with several large-scale battles. This new season will also likely change how audiences perceive the character of Rhaenyra Targaryen.
Rhaenyra Will Change In House Of The Dragon Season 3 (Like Daenerys Did In Game Of Thrones)

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly about Season 3 of House of the Dragon, Emma D’Arcy explained that her character, Rhaenyra, is beginning to become tyrannical. This shift will allow viewers to see a previously relatable character undergo a significant transformation, and her future actions will likely test the audience’s sympathy for her.
Okay, so I’m really excited about this new character – it sounds like she’s a Targaryen aiming for the Iron Throne, and she’s got dragons! It feels a lot like Daenerys’ story from Game of Thrones, which is awesome, but I’m also seeing some fans online worry that it might be too similar. Especially after D’Arcy said…
Rhaenyra becomes increasingly extreme due to a sort of religious zealotry, which fuels her decisions and beliefs.
It was expected that Rhaenyra would share similarities with Daenerys. As the rightful heir and the main character, the show has generally positioned her as someone to support, even though some viewers favor Team Green. Like Daenerys, she eventually claims King’s Landing, though her takeover is less destructive than what happened in Game of Thrones.
In Season 3, we’ll likely see Rhaenyra take control of King’s Landing, though the exact details are still unknown. The trailers suggest she’ll be more involved in the action, possibly with more dragon-led attacks. Importantly, this isn’t a random change to her character; it’s a natural progression that’s been hinted at throughout the series.
Aegon’s Dream Makes Rhaenyra’s Change Better, Not Worse

Rhaenyra’s strong belief in prophecy isn’t random; it stems from Aegon the Conqueror’s dream – his version of the Song of Ice and Fire. This dream, a significant change to the established history of the Conquest, predicted the threat of the White Walkers and stated that only a Targaryen ruler could unite everyone to fight them. While Rhaenyra isn’t the hero the prophecy foretold, she believes she could be. King Viserys shared the prophecy with her when he named her heir, and it’s been a major influence on her ever since.
Team Black’s increasing dragon army has led her to become arrogant and believe she’s destined for greatness – not just as Queen, but as humanity’s savior. This conviction will drive her to do whatever it takes to claim what she feels is rightfully hers. As the actress playing her explains, she wanted to explore what happens when the character no longer feels the need to justify her actions.
Thinking about Daenerys at the end of Game of Thrones, I see a connection – someone finally free from constraints and willing to be pretty ruthless. While they could have built up to that a little better, I always felt hints of her Targaryen side throughout the show. But with Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon, there’s already a lot of established backstory, especially with Aegon’s dream driving her actions. It makes total sense why she’s becoming the person we see, and I think that’ll be even clearer as Season 3 unfolds, especially if they stick to the book’s storyline.
Just because this storyline is compelling doesn’t guarantee everyone will enjoy it. Rhaenyra’s journey might prove controversial, but it’s already captured attention, and D’Arcy’s performance is more than capable of handling the complexities – just as Emilia Clarke could have. This is actually a positive change from the book, where Rhaenyra was too passive. Giving her more control over her own story is a good thing, and the show wisely avoids portraying her as a simple hero. Some viewers have already dubbed her “Rhaenyra the Cruel,” and it will be captivating to see if she truly embodies that title, and whether we can still feel for her even as she does.
House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres on June 21st on HBO and HBO Max.
