I’m so excited for more House of the Dragon! The showrunner just gave us an update, and HBO is already reacting to what’s coming in season three. Even better, they’ve made a ton of progress on season four already! We’re looking at a 2026 release for season three, probably late summer, which can’t come soon enough after how amazing the first two seasons of this Game of Thrones prequel (based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood) were.
Ryan Condal, a co-creator of the show, recently shared on the podcast The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of that production on the fourth season of House of the Dragon is moving forward well. He said they began working on the new season a couple of months ago and are making significant progress. While working on season four, the team has also started submitting episodes of season three to the network.
According to Condal, they’ve begun sharing early versions of episodes with the network, and the feedback has been positive. The next season is expected to arrive roughly two years after the conclusion of season 2 in August 2024. The season 2 finale left viewers with a major cliffhanger, hinting at the start of large-scale conflicts to come.
House of the Dragon tells the story of the Targaryen family about 200 years before the events in Game of Thrones, when dragons were still plentiful and powerful. After King Viserys (Paddy Considine) loses his first wife, he chooses his daughter, Rhaenyra (played by Milly Alcock and Emma D’Arcy), to be his successor, but many powerful lords challenge his decision and her claim to the Iron Throne.
After being urged to remarry, Viserys’ death sparks a brutal civil war for the throne between his daughter, Rhaenyra, and her brother, Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney). The show, House of the Dragon, has received critical acclaim, including a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series and a Golden Globe win for Best Drama Series – an honor its original series never achieved.
As fans anticipate the return of House of the Dragon, HBO is also releasing another Game of Thrones spin-off called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This new series takes place roughly 100 years before the events of the original show. HBO has already ordered a second season, signaling the network’s commitment to expanding the Game of Thrones universe after the controversial ending of the main series.
Ryan Condal has mentioned the plan is for House of the Dragon to conclude after four seasons. This timeframe allows them to adapt the entirety of the Targaryen history detailed in Fire & Blood. While the show will end then, the creators are confident it will finish strong and within a good timeframe, leaving fans satisfied.
