Chadwick Boseman’s unexpected death in 2020 deeply affected Hollywood, as few people knew he was ill. He rapidly became a well-known actor through roles portraying real-life figures like Jackie Robinson and Thurgood Marshall, and especially for his iconic part as T’Challa, the Black Panther, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His impact on film was already secure when he passed away prematurely. Because of his significant role in the MCU, the franchise had to make substantial adjustments to the planned sequel to Black Panther.
Even before Chadwick Boseman’s passing, Marvel Studios had been working on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever for several years. While details about the original plan for the movie were kept under wraps, the conflict between Wakanda and Namor’s Atlantis was always intended to be central to the story. Now, director Ryan Coogler is sharing insights into the original script and how much it differed from the final film.
Black Panther 2’s Original Plans Revealed
As many viewers know, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever unexpectedly became a story about mourning and how the women in T’Challa’s life coped with his death. The film concluded by hinting at a future storyline: T’Challa had a son with Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), who also bears his name. Director Ryan Coogler recently shared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that the original script focused entirely on the relationship between T’Challa and his father, and the movie would have been built around that connection.
Coogler explained that the original script, which was around 180 pages long, centered around a tradition called the ‘Ritual of Eight.’ This involved an eight-day journey into the wilderness for an eight-year-old prince and his father, where the prince had to obey his father’s every command. The prince was allowed to ask his father any question during this time, and the father had to answer truthfully. The story unfolded with Namor launching an attack during this ritual, forcing the prince to navigate this dangerous situation while constantly accompanied by his father. This version of Namor was portrayed as exceptionally formidable.
He explained that during the intense negotiations and conflicts depicted in the film, Chadwick’s character needed to have his son present at all times, upholding a tradition that had never been broken. He felt the movie was going to be incredible, and that Chadwick would have delivered a phenomenal performance, but sadly, life had other plans.
Ryan Coogler acknowledged the significant effort he invested in the initial script, but emphasized his deep appreciation for the final version of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. He expressed his excitement about being able to create a film centered on female characters, saying, “I love that movie so much.”
