Alys Rivers is one of the most enigmatic figures in House of the Dragon, and some fans believe she might actually be Melisandre from Game of Thrones! We first met Alys in Season 2, and many questions remain about her true abilities and background. While House of the Dragon takes place roughly 170 years before Thrones, making it unlikely for most characters to reappear, Melisandre is a possible exception due to her unique circumstances.
As seen in Game of Thrones, Melisandre is roughly 400 years old during the show’s timeline, and her past before aligning with Stannis Baratheon remains a secret. Like Alys Rivers from House of the Dragon, Melisandre appears much younger than she actually is, experiences visions and prophecies, practices dark magic, and impacts those vying for power over the Iron Throne. This has naturally sparked fan theories suggesting Alys might be Melisandre, or that they are somehow connected. Gayle Rankin, who plays Alys, recently discussed this theory with Chris Killian from ComicBook before the release of Season 3 of House of the Dragon, saying:
Yes, I’m aware people are speculating about whether my character, Alys Rivers, could be Melisandre’s mother or grandmother. It’s a connection others have definitely noticed. I don’t think it’s my place to confirm or deny anything, as that’s really a question for George R.R. Martin, who created the history. When developing the character, I didn’t specifically rule out that possibility, but I also didn’t intentionally build it in. We’ll learn more about Alys Rivers as the story unfolds, and while her world and Melisandre’s are linked, I didn’t consciously create a direct connection between them.
Alys Rivers Probably Isn’t Melisandre (But Learning Her Backstory Should Still Be Fascinating)

While it’s possible Alys and Melisandre are the same person – given Melisandre’s age, similarities between the characters, and her ability to change her appearance with magic – it’s probably not true, nor are they likely related. The idea is an interesting fan theory, similar to many others in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, but it doesn’t fully hold up when examined closely.
Melisandre and Alys differ mainly in how they use magic and see the future. Melisandre’s power comes from her devotion to R’hllor, the Lord of Light. Alys, however, appears connected to the Old Gods, using the weirwood tree at Harrenhal to show Daemon Targaryen glimpses of what’s to come.
This difference alone is a major problem with the idea, even before considering how unlikely it is that Melisandre could have lived through both the Dance of the Dragons and then reappeared during the War of the Five Kings (though these events are connected to theories about the Prince That Was Promised).
Whether or not Alys is Melisandre, she’s a compelling character, and the showrunner has hinted that we’ll learn a lot more about her story. Fans have been speculating about her origins and abilities ever since the book Fire & Blood came out in 2018 – some even believe she might be Leaf, from the Children of the Forest – and after eight years, we might finally get some definitive answers.
House of the Dragon Season 3 will premiere on June 21st on HBO and HBO Max.
