How Girls Next Door Inspired Keeping Up With the Kardashians

Kris Jenner was keeping up with reality shows before launching her own.

The show *Keeping Up With the Kardashians* actually got its start from the earlier series *Girls Next Door*. *Girls Next Door* followed the lives of Hugh Hefner’s girlfriends – Holly Madison, Bridget Marquardt, and Kendra Wilkinson – and served as the inspiration for the Kardashian family’s reality show.

“I honestly thought that was the funniest thing ever,” the 69-year-old said to Amanda Hirsch on her *Not Skinny But Not Fat* podcast, according to a preview obtained by TopMob News. “I was just so confused!”

Before *Keeping Up With the Kardashians* launched in 2007, *Girls Next Door* premiered in 2005. *Keeping Up With the Kardashians* followed Kris Jenner, then married to Caitlyn Jenner, and their family, which included Kourtney Kardashian, Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Rob Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, and Kylie Jenner.

Kris explained that having a large family made reality television seem like a natural fit. ‘I figured it would be a really interesting world for us to explore,’ she said, ‘and now, look at us – we’ve been doing it for years!’

Besides *Girls Next Door*, Kris was also encouraged to try reality television by some well-known friends.

Kris explained that her close friend, Kathie Lee Gifford, frequently told her family, ‘You need your own reality show – things are crazy here!’ Then, one night, a friend who works as a casting director for shows like *Dancing With the Stars* came over, witnessed the family’s lively atmosphere, and suggested they connect with Ryan Seacrest.

And they did, with Ryan becoming the executive producer of their show.

As Kris noted, “The rest is history, so it really worked out.”
