Many pop stars have tried acting, but most have found it much harder than it looks. Lady Gaga is a clear exception. While the movie ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ wasn’t successful (though it wasn’t her fault), her performance in ‘A Star is Born’ truly showcased her acting talent and earned her an Academy Award nomination. She’s continued to appear in films like ‘House of Gucci,’ and her latest role continues that fashion-focused theme – which is how her cameo in ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ came about.
How The Devils Wears Prada 2 Lady Gaga cameo happened….
Meryl Streep and Lady Gaga connected at the “SNL 50” celebration in February 2025 and quickly became friends. Streep later told Jimmy Kimmel that she had envisioned a live performance by a pop star during a fashion show in Milan. She thought of Gaga because of her talent and love for fashion, and luckily, she already had her contact information.
Lady Gaga was touring the world when she made a special trip to Milan Fashion Week to film a performance of her song, ‘Shape of a Woman,’ which she’d written for the movie. The director, David Frankel, also created a fun scene between Gaga and Meryl Streep, playing characters who clearly dislike each other. Frankel explained they invented a backstory where Gaga’s character was a demanding diva that Miranda, Streep’s character, couldn’t stand, and Gaga was thrilled with the idea!
The dress issue….
Lady Gaga’s performance was a celebration of Italian fashion. Costume designer Molly Rogers initially considered a bright yellow Versace gown, but it made Gaga look more like a model than a performer. They ultimately chose a custom Versace outfit from Gaga’s past – the one she wore to the 2012 Grammys. She tried on several options, but as Rogers noted, she moved best in that particular dress, and Gaga herself felt the same way. Unfortunately, the dress began to fall apart during filming, similar to issues experienced on sets like “Sex and the City.” Thankfully, the team was able to repair it, and the final result was stunning.
