As a huge fan of live-action adaptations, I was thrilled to hear the news! Cate Blanchett, who I absolutely loved in Severance, has just joined the cast of the How to Train Your Dragon sequel. It’s already shaping up to be something special with her on board.
Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will play the character Drago in How to Train Your Dragon 2. He recently appeared as the enigmatic Mr. Drummond. The film will also feature returning cast members Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trevaldwyn.
Dean DeBlois, the writer and director of the 2025 live-action How to Train Your Dragon, is returning to lead the sequel as writer, director, and executive producer. The new film, scheduled for release on June 11, 2027, will continue the story of Hiccup and Toothless. The How to Train Your Dragon series, which began as an animated movie in 2010, has grossed over $2.2 billion globally. Kjartan Ólafsson will play the role of Drago, a character originally voiced by Djimon Hounsou in the animated sequel.
Cate Blanchett Will Return in the Sequel
Cate Blanchett is returning to the How to Train Your Dragon series to reprise her role as Valka, a Viking warrior. She originally voiced the character in the 2018 film How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and will now play Valka in a new live-action movie. Valka is known as a rescuer of dragons and is the long-lost mother of Hiccup and wife of Stoick the Vast (played by Gerard Butler).
The movie How to Train Your Dragon, released last summer, was a huge success, earning over $636 million worldwide. Viewers loved it, giving it a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics generally agreed, awarding it a “certified fresh” score of 77%.
