How to watch Backrooms – is it streaming?

As a horror fan, I’m loving how many exciting new releases we’re getting right now! Just after the huge hit Obsession from Curry Baker, another really creepy movie is coming out this week, and it’s from a director who actually started as a YouTuber – which is pretty cool!

Backrooms is the first feature film from 20-year-old director Kane Parsons. It’s based on his own online series, which itself was inspired by the widely known internet story called ‘creepypasta’ about a vast, empty, and unsettling space of rooms.

Okay, so I’m really excited about this new horror flick! Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve are starring, and everything I’m hearing is fantastic. Plus, the early numbers suggest it’s going to be a big one – honestly, 2026 has been amazing for horror so far, and this looks like it’ll keep the streak going.

Curious about the online buzz and unsettling feeling surrounding ‘liminal spaces’? Here’s a guide to experiencing ‘The Backrooms’ for yourself.

How to watch Backrooms – is it streaming?

Even though it started as a YouTube series, this is designed as a movie for the big screen. For now, the only way to see it is by going to a movie theater.

The movie comes out on Friday, May 29th and will be playing in many theaters, so it should be easy to find one near you. Check your local cinema listings for showtimes!

When will Backrooms be available to watch at home?

The film will eventually be available to watch at home, like most major releases. However, we don’t have a firm date yet, as it may depend on how well the movie performs in theaters.

Movies typically become available to stream about 45 days after they first hit theaters, but this timeframe can vary. It depends on factors like the studio releasing the film, how well it’s doing in cinemas, and other distribution choices.

Based on current estimates, the movie should be available to rent or buy on platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV around mid-July. We’ll let you know if we get a confirmed release date!

Good news for those who missed it in theaters: I’m hearing that A24 and HBO Max have reached an agreement to bring the film to streaming in the US. We’re still waiting to find out if that deal will extend to the UK, but I’ll definitely keep you posted as soon as I have more information.

Backrooms plot – what’s it about?

The story follows Clark, a shopkeeper who accidentally discovers a strange world made up of endless office rooms, filled with hidden mysteries. When Clark disappears, his therapist, Dr. Mary Kline, sets out to find him.

That only scratches the surface of the unsettling things Clark encounters in the backrooms, and it’s better to go into the experience without knowing all the surprises.

Backrooms cast – who stars in the film?

I’m so excited about this cast! It’s fantastic to see Chiwetel Ejiofor, who was incredible in ’12 Years a Slave,’ taking the lead, alongside Renate Reinsve. She’s been getting a lot of buzz, and deservedly so – her recent film, ‘Fjord,’ just won the Palme D’Or at Cannes! It’s a real sign of the quality we can expect.

The film also stars Mark Duplass from The Morning Show (who recently clarified that Osgood Perkins of Longlegs did not secretly direct the movie), Finn Bennett, known for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and Lukita Maxwell from Shrinking.

You can find the full cast below:

  • Chiwetel Ejiofor as Clark
  • Renate Reinsve as Dr Mary Kline
  • Mark Duplass as a scientist
  • Finn Bennett as Bobby
  • Lukita Maxwell as Kat
  • Avan Jogia as Naren Warne
  • Robert Bobroczkyi as TBC
  • Krista Kosonen as Mary’s mother
