Watch IT: Welcome to Derry: Synopsis
Get ready for a scary new series just in time for Halloween! The creators of the IT movies are bringing us Welcome to Derry, a prequel that reveals the hidden history of Pennywise the Dancing Clown and his connection to the town of Derry. Here’s how and where you can watch and stream the entire series, no matter where you are.
If you’re concerned that Welcome to Derry is just a money-making sequel, you can rest easy – it’s actually quite the opposite. The show expands on the rich story from Stephen King’s 1986 novel IT, exploring parts of the book that haven’t been shown on screen yet. The IT movies from 2017 and 2019 focused on Bill, Bev, Richie, and the rest of The Loser Club’s fight against Pennywise. Welcome to Derry, however, looks at the backstory of the town and the supernatural events that have caused so much tragedy for its residents over the years, drawing from the ‘interlude’ sections of the novel.
The first season of Welcome to Derry explores the events leading up to the story of IT, focusing on Pennywise’s previous appearances in the town—which happen approximately every 27 years. The show is set in 1962 and follows Leroy and Charlotte Hanlon (played by Jovan Adepo and Taylour Paige) as they move to Derry with their son, Will (Blake Cameron James). Will is the grandfather of Mike Hanlon (Chosen Jacobs/Isaiah Mustafa) from IT. Their arrival coincides with a wave of frightening events, beginning with the unexplained disappearance of a local boy.
Chris Chalk will play Dick Halloran, a character known to Stephen King fans from The Shining. While details are scarce, Halloran is a minor character in the novel—an army cook and one of the founders of The Black Spot, an African-American army nightclub. The series seems to be heavily featuring this nightclub, and it may be the location of a significant tragedy, as it is in the book. There’s also a connection to another King classic: a bus from Shawshank State Prison is clearly visible in the trailer.
Fans hoping the new series Welcome to Derry will feel like the first season of Stranger Things (especially with the final season of that show coming soon) will be pleased to know it features a talented group of young actors like Luke Beattie, Redden Callaghan, Tom Hulshof, and Taylour Paige. The trailer shows a lot of classic kid-detective scenes, including time spent at the famous Standpipe. Importantly, the series is being made by the same team – Andy and Barbara Muschietti, who directed and produced IT – and Andy Muschietti will direct most of the episodes.
The new HBO series, IT: Welcome to Derry, is exciting news for Stephen King fans who want to explore more of the story, and for those who loved the movie, it promises to expand on the terrifying world of Derry and Pennywise. If you’re prepared for more nightmares caused by Pennywise the clown, here’s how to watch the series online, no matter where you are.
