Hugh Jackman Is Unrecognizable in a Surprising New Fantasy Movie (And It Reminds Us of Old Man Logan)

While fans are still hoping Hugh Jackman might return as Wolverine in the next Avengers movie, he’s confirmed to star in a unique project next year: The Death of Robin Hood. Directed by Michael Sarnoski, the film portrays the legendary hero in his later years, grappling with his past decisions. Sarnoski isn’t aiming to simply retell the familiar Robin Hood story, but to offer a fresh perspective. Recently, the first image of Jackman as Robin Hood was released, and it bears a striking resemblance to his iconic comic book character.

Entertainment Weekly recently revealed some early photos from the upcoming film, The Death of Robin Hood, which is scheduled for release in 2026. The photos include a compelling shot of Hugh Jackman as a battle-worn Robin Hood, as well as images of Robin Hood with Little John (played by Bill Skarsgård) and a glimpse of Jodie Comer’s enigmatic character. You can view the photos below.

The Death of Robin Hood Could Be Logan for Robin Hood Fans

After listening to Hugh Jackman discuss his new film, The Death of Robin Hood, it’s easy to see similarities to his role in Logan. He describes this Robin Hood as a flawed, realistic man, burdened by his past and capable of both pain and love. Director Mark Sarnoski adds that this Robin Hood is a violent outlaw who has done wrong, suggesting a complex and morally gray take on the classic hero. This approach promises a unique and thought-provoking adaptation, different from previous versions audiences have seen.

Hugh Jackman is a great choice for The Death of Robin Hood. The character will struggle with his heroic image and the difficult truths about his past, which echoes themes Jackman explored in Logan. Like Logan, this role asks him to consider how a hero is perceived, especially as they age and face their own mortality. Logan is a critically acclaimed comic book movie, even receiving an Oscar nomination for its script, and The Death of Robin Hood could certainly benefit from a similar approach.

Other attempts to portray a more realistic and intense Robin Hood story haven’t always succeeded – Ridley Scott’s film with Russell Crowe is a prime example of one that didn’t quite hit the mark. Hopefully, The Death of Robin Hood will fare much better. Everything suggests it has the potential to be something special. The film features a strong cast, and director Michael Sarnoski is quickly becoming a rising star, known for his work on Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One. While Day One could have been a standard prequel, Sarnoski infused it with genuine emotion, demonstrating his ability to revitalize well-known stories.

These images suggest this new take on Robin Hood won’t be a simple retelling of the familiar story where he steals from the rich to help the poor and becomes a local hero, and that’s a good thing. While stories like Robin Hood will always be popular, it’s important for filmmakers to find fresh perspectives to keep them interesting. We haven’t seen a major movie version of Robin Hood like this before, and it will be fascinating to see what director Sarnoski has created.
