He was among the first major anti-heroes, debuting regularly in Uncanny X-Men after issue #94 of X-Men (Vol. 1) in 1975. Fans quickly embraced the mysterious, tough, and ultimately good-hearted character, making him a star within the X-Men team and inspiring many similar characters. While his willingness to kill enemies was initially controversial, it’s now a common trait among superheroes. Wolverine’s popularity fundamentally changed the landscape of superhero comics, and he’s remained a central figure in top-selling titles since the 1970s. It all began with The Incredible Hulk #181, a collaboration between Len Wein, Herb Trimpe, Jack Abel, Glynis Wein, and Artie Simek.

Wolverine would go on to be featured in many great comics, but his initial appearance in Incredible Hulk #181 came first. This single issue was crucial in developing a character who would have a massive and lasting impact on the comic book world. Despite not being universally loved, Wolverine clearly connected with readers for decades. Thanks to his debut in Incredible Hulk #181, Wolverine is now considered a pivotal figure in Marvel Universe history.

So, what makes Incredible Hulk #181 so special? The previous issue ended with a cliffhanger: Hulk and Wendigo were about to fight, and Wolverine appeared to intervene. Issue #181 then revealed why Wolverine was there and truly introduced his character. We learned he was a Canadian government agent tasked with stopping dangerous creatures, leading to a three-way battle. This fight immediately showed us what kind of person Logan was – a 5’3″ fighter who wasn’t intimidated by even the most powerful monsters. While Wolverine’s backstory would be developed over time, this issue instantly established one key trait: he was completely fearless.

This comic book series aimed to transform Wolverine into Marvel’s version of Batman, and seventeen years later, the character became significant to me. I first encountered him in Uncanny X-Men #279, battling a mind-controlled Gambit during an attack by the Shadow King on the X-Men. He immediately became my favorite. As a ten-year-old, I enjoyed his witty remarks, action, and mysterious nature. But as I grew older, I understood the real reason for my connection to him: his unwavering determination. Logan has endured immense suffering, yet he always perseveres.

James Howlett, known as Wolverine, was a complex man who had made serious mistakes. Despite his past, he constantly strived for redemption, proving that even the most terrible actions don’t have to define a person’s life. He reminded me that everyone carries regrets, but it’s possible to overcome them and become better. His journey towards improvement, inspired by the events in Incredible Hulk #181, showed me a path forward.

Wolverine Has Earned His Place on Superhero Mount Rushmore

I’ve spent a large part of my writing career focusing on Wolverine. But it all started with Incredible Hulk #181. A brief appearance by a Canadian superhero in a fight with two major villains changed everything for me. That single moment launched my career, allowing me to do what I love and earn a living from it.

I’ve recently written about Wolverine and how surprisingly his success story unfolded. He initially appeared as a minor character in a fight, and easily could have been forgotten like so many others Marvel has created over the years. But writer Len Wein brought him into the X-Men with Giant-Size X-Men #1, and that changed everything. Wolverine became a true icon, inspiring many, and his first solo appearance in Incredible Hulk #181 marked the beginning of his legendary status, forever changing the world of comics.
