A new dystopian sci-fi series is already captivating audiences on Hulu.
The streaming service has had a big hit with Paradise, a drama created by Dan Fogelman that follows people trying to rebuild society after a catastrophic event. It’s received three Emmy nominations, including one for Sterling K. Brown’s performance, and a third season of Paradise is already being filmed.
The Testaments Is Taking Off On Hulu
It’s a spinoff of The Handmaid’s Tale.
Just days after it premiered, the new show The Testaments is quickly becoming popular, already reaching the Top 10. As a continuation of The Handmaid’s Tale, and starring Chase Infiniti from One Battle After Another, the sci-fi drama debuted at number 5 in the U.S. Now, as of April 10th, it’s jumped to number 2.
According to FlixPatrol, which monitors streaming numbers, the new spinoff series is doing well around the world. It currently ranks among the Top 10 shows in countries like Argentina, Brazil, France, and Germany, among others. This suggests that launching a series based on The Handmaid’s Tale was a good decision, at least initially.
What’s The Testaments About?
It’s based on the book by Margaret Atwood.
Created by Bruce Miller, the showrunner and executive producer of The Handmaid’s Tale, and adapted from Margaret Atwood’s novel, The Testaments follows the stories of young women growing up in the oppressive society of Gilead. Set more than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, the series explores how this new generation prepares for what lies ahead.
The story primarily follows Agnes and Daisy, two young women at Aunt Lydia’s school for prospective wives. Agnes is dedicated and religious, while Daisy is a newcomer to Gilead and its beliefs. As they learn and grow, their friendship becomes a powerful force that could reshape not only their lives but also their current circumstances. The series has ten episodes.
Elisabeth Moss returns as her character from The Handmaid’s Tale and also helped produce The Testaments. The cast includes Ann Dowd, Lucy Halliday, Mabel Li, Amy Seimetz, Brad Alexander, Rowan Blanchard, Mattea Conforti, Zarrin Darnell-Martin, Eva Foote, Isolde Ardies, Shechinah Mpumlwana, Birva Pandya, and Kira Guloien.
Early reviews for The Testaments are largely positive, earning an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes after 37 reviews. It seems audiences are also responding well to the new story.
The Testaments season 1 episodes stream Wednesdays on Hulu.
