Even after a hugely successful career in video games, Troy Baker feels like he’s only just beginning.
Over the past fifteen years, Baker has been involved in so many popular and well-regarded games that it’s likely any randomly chosen one will include his voice work or acting.
Even though the actor has achieved a lot and worked on many major projects, especially now that he’s turned 50, he still has plenty more to offer.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Troy Baker discussed his work in video games and shared his feelings when a project wraps up.
He admits he always feels like he’s just beginning. No matter how big or small a job is, he always feels like he finally understands everything right as it’s ending, and immediately wants to start a new one.
He explains that he always tries to apply what he’s learned in past jobs to his current and future work.
I always feel like there’s one more good attempt I can make, another idea worth exploring, or that I’ve gained enough understanding of the character, story, and filmmaking process to do a better job.
It can be a really vulnerable experience – I know other actors feel that way too. But I’ve realized that the important thing is to learn from each project and use those lessons to improve my work on the next one. Ultimately, I believe I can contribute more to future projects by constantly learning from past experiences.
Baker has worked on a wide variety of games, ranging from small independent projects to major, highly-anticipated releases.
While many recognize him as Joel from The Last of Us, he’s also starred in several other popular games, including Death Stranding 1 and 2, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, inFAMOUS: Second Son, and BioShock Infinite.
He recently voiced the main character in the indie game MOUSE: P.I. for Hire, and he’s also confirmed to be working with Naughty Dog again on their upcoming game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
Baker believes his most impressive achievements are still to come, though he’s not sure what the future holds. He acknowledges that while he appreciates the opportunities he’s had, he doesn’t expect any guarantees from the industry.
He admits he’s done well and feels content with his accomplishments, even if he doesn’t get any further chances.
I’ve had an incredible career, and I’m completely satisfied. If my current job were to end tomorrow, I’d be perfectly content. I’m ready to move on to other pursuits, as I have plenty of stories I want to share and still have contributions to make. But even if this is the end of my professional life, I’d be thankful for everything I’ve achieved.
