Takashi Yamazaki’s film, Godzilla Minus One, was a huge success, offering a fresh take on the classic monster. The 2023 movie featured Godzilla appearing in Japan during the difficult period following World War II. Though the characters were able to defeat him, Godzilla is back! This year, the anticipated sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero, will bring the monster to America, and Yamazaki has suggested a reason for Godzilla’s westward journey.
I was so excited to read the latest interview with director Yamazaki on Collider! He talked about that incredible moment with Godzilla towering over the Statue of Liberty, and how even though it’s a brief scene, it’s really key for one of the characters. He also explained the mix of English and Japanese in the movie. Apparently, the US military – the Army, Navy, the whole shebang – plays a huge role in the story, so they needed some English dialogue to make it feel authentic. He couldn’t give a precise percentage of how much English there will be, but it sounds like it’s a significant part of the film!
Godzilla Minus Zero’s Human Angle
The director of Godzilla Minus Zero explained that after the success of Godzilla Minus One, they’re again focusing on a family – the Shikishima family – to help audiences connect with the story. He realized that with such large-scale monster events, a smaller, more personal perspective – like a family facing challenges – makes the drama more relatable and helps viewers understand the full impact of what’s happening.
The film begins with a seemingly perfect family, the Shikishimas. However, the two years leading up to the story – specifically, the emergence of Godzilla – disrupt their happiness and put them in danger once more. The filmmakers expect audiences to experience a similar emotional journey as the family, witnessing their struggles, resilience, and the strength they find together in the face of adversity.
The new film, Godzilla Minus One, shows a significantly larger and more powerful Godzilla than we’ve seen before, making him an even greater threat to the world. Although there’s no sign of other monsters appearing yet, this Godzilla alone could push humanity to the edge of destruction.
