I Think the Fast & Furious Franchise Already Had the Perfect Ending (It Just Doesn’t Know It)

The *Fast & Furious* series is facing more problems, and the next movie is struggling to get off the ground, even though the last one came out over two years ago. Vin Diesel is publicly pushing Universal Pictures to start production, but reports suggest he might be the reason for the hold-up. Universal reportedly wants to significantly reduce the budget for *Fast X – Part 2*, which Diesel may not agree with, as he seems to envision this film as the finale for the entire franchise.

The disagreement will probably continue for a while, but a solution is expected eventually. Even though the entertainment business is unpredictable, the *Fast & Furious* films consistently manage to avoid losing money. What everyone involved seems to be missing, though, is that the series could arguably be finished already, depending on how you look at it.

Fast X‘s Ending Sets Up the Franchise’s Biggest Story Yet

The latest installment, *Fast X*, begins similarly to recent films in the *Fast & Furious* saga. Dom Toretto and his team initially work undercover, but Dom is looking for a quieter life. That peace is quickly shattered when Cipher, a returning villain, alerts him to a new threat: Dante. While Dante initially appears to be just another enemy, he quickly proves how far he’ll go to defeat Dom and his family, hitting them where it hurts most. He kidnaps Dom’s son, Brian, and shockingly kills Dom’s brother, Jakob, signaling that this villain is unlike any they’ve faced before.

The rest of Dom’s team is handling a crisis of their own far away, and it takes them a long time to reach him. When their plane finally appears, it seems like they’re going to succeed in rescuing him and letting him take the fight to their enemy. But Fast X throws a curveball: the villain, Dante, crashes the plane and destroys a dam, unleashing a massive flood toward Dom and his son. The movie ends with everyone’s fate uncertain, setting up a sequel. However, this is the Fast & Furious franchise, so anything is possible, and you can expect the unexpected.

Ending on a Cliffhanger Would Allow the Fast & Furious Franchise to Do the Funniest Thing

Many fans complain that the recent *Fast & Furious* movies have strayed too far from the simple roots of the first film, which centered on stealing DVD players. While it’s hard to ask Vin Diesel and the team to change course after achieving so much financial success, there’s a point where ending the series would be smart. Dom and his crew have already done everything imaginable – robbed a vault in Rio, prevented a nuclear war, and even traveled to space. With no logical next step, the studio could wrap things up nicely by presenting *Fast X* as the final installment.

The biggest surprise in *Fast X* is when Gisele, who everyone thought died in *Fast & Furious 6*, unexpectedly appears. Instead of awkwardly explaining how she survived, the filmmakers could simply reveal that she—and everyone else in the ‘Fast Family’—actually *didn’t* make it. While that might seem extreme, it wouldn’t be the strangest thing to happen in these movies, and it would allow the characters to continue their adventures even after death. This would mean the story could go on indefinitely, and the studio wouldn’t be forced to make movies they don’t seem interested in.
