At the conclusion of *One Piece* Season 1, Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji prepared to begin their journey to The Grand Line. After a quick stop in Loguetown, they’ll arrive at their destination in Season 2, where they’ll first encounter Laboon – a huge whale covered in scars. While fans await the release date for the next season on Netflix, Taz Skylar, the actor who plays Sanji, has shared details about filming inside the impressively large Laboon set.
As a huge *One Piece* fan, I was already excited when the Season 2 trailer briefly showed Laboon! But Entertainment Weekly just dropped some incredible, clear pictures of him, and wow! They’re using CGI, of course, to really bring this gentle giant to life, but what’s even cooler is they *built* a practical Laboon too! Taz Skylar shared that they actually repurposed the biggest boat set they had to create it, which is just amazing dedication to the source material.
It was an unbelievably large whale – as big as a cruise ship! The inside of its stomach was completely covered, with a pool of stomach acid at the bottom. Amazingly, they even found shipwrecks inside! This whale wasn’t just big, it was colossal – far larger than any normal whale, more like a prehistoric giant, almost like a megalodon.

David Dastmalchian, who voices Mr. 3 in the One Piece live-action series, is looking forward to season two. However, something he mentioned has sparked concern about what’s ahead for the show.
Before the second season of the live-action ‘One Piece’ on Netflix arrives, the show has reached a significant achievement that fans will likely celebrate.
Similar to the Laboon seen in the original *One Piece* manga and anime, the Netflix version has spent decades near Reverse Mountain – a key entry point to the Grand Line, known for its unusual upward-flowing river. Laboon’s scars are the result of repeatedly trying to break through the mountain, hoping to reach the pirates he once traveled with. Years ago, those pirates entrusted Laboon to the care of Crocus, a doctor portrayed by Clive Russell, known for his role in *Game of Thrones*.
Even if you’re not familiar with the *One Piece* story from the manga or anime, Taz Skylar’s comments about the Laboon set suggest that some characters in the Netflix series will find themselves inside the whale. However, the impressive set was built without a roof, which created a bit of a problem, as the actor explained:
We were in serious trouble if it rained, and one day it really did start pouring. We all huddled inside the whale’s tail, hoping it would pass. It was a strangely unreal situation.
The battle with Laboon is only the beginning of the challenges the Straw Hat Pirates will face as they continue through the Grand Line. The new season of *One Piece* will introduce viewers to the powerful giants Brogy and Dorry, the charming reindeer Chopper, and a dangerous new enemy: the criminal organization Baroque Works. All of these experiences will help Luffy and his crew on their quest to become the King of the Pirates and find the legendary treasure, the One Piece.
Recent updates suggest the new season of *One Piece* could arrive on Netflix in early 2026. Plus, the show has already been renewed for a third season, meaning this adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s world will continue for a while.
