Alanah Pearce, who used to develop games at Santa Monica Studio—the team behind the God of War series—thinks the upcoming God of War Trilogy Remake for PlayStation 5 should include the often-debated sexual content from the original games.
Ever since the game was shown off last month during a PlayStation State of Play presentation, people have been wondering if the updated versions will still include the adult-themed minigames. These minigames weren’t featured in the later versions of the game released on PS5 and PS4.
A recent poll on Push Square found that 70% of readers want the minigames to return in the PS5 remake of the trilogy. Alanah Pearce appears to agree, expressing her support for keeping them during a recent livestream.
Pearce highlights that the sexualized mini-games in the original God of War games were created with female designers involved. Specifically, he notes that the design of Aphrodite’s chamber in God of War 3, including its visual elements, was intentionally crafted – with input from women – to resemble female genitalia.
Okay, so apparently the design of this area in the game was intentionally meant to look like a vagina, and the women on the development team were the ones who came up with that. I watched a video where they talked about it, and Ariel Lawrence specifically was really proud of how it turned out.
Pearce argues that sex is a natural and essential aspect of the human experience. He suggests that it’s often missing from video games because directors feel uncomfortable depicting it.
Regarding the God of War games, Pearce argues that he supports including the sex minigames, even acknowledging they were a bit over-the-top in the originals. He believes they still fit within the remakes and weren’t disrespectful to women, suggesting the games actually use Kratos’s rage and sexual encounters to highlight his flawed character and lack of fulfillment.
Considering the story established in the original God of War games, Amelia Pearce believes the narratives of God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok are more impactful if players are familiar with the earlier, more brutal version of Kratos. She feels the original games should remain unchanged and accessible, as they provide important context for his character development.
