As a huge Star Wars fan, I was definitely paying attention when Kathleen Kennedy stepped down earlier this year. It’s awesome that Dave Filoni – someone George Lucas himself mentored for years – is now running Lucasfilm with Lynwen Brennan. From what I understand, Brennan will be focused on the business side of things, while Dave, who already became Chief Creative Officer last year, will really be able to focus on the stories and creative direction. Honestly, when I first heard the news, I was a little worried about what this would mean for the future of Star Wars movies and shows. Kathleen definitely had her share of challenges with fan reactions, so it’s a big change.
Look, as a lifelong Star Wars fan, any change always feels a little scary, but this feels extra intense. I think a lot of us were worried because Dave Filoni tends to really focus on the characters he created – like Ahsoka and Ezra – and we wondered if he’d prioritize those over expanding the existing Star Wars universe. Plus, there was concern about whether he’d stay true to what made Star Wars special in the first place. Those worries have really resurfaced lately, especially after his recent comments about Darth Vader and how he was portrayed in the Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord comic. It’s got a lot of fans raising their eyebrows, myself included.
Dave Filoni Sees Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader As Different Characters

The recent finale of the Star Wars series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, featured an unexpected appearance by Darth Vader. In a chilling scene, heralded by his iconic breathing, Vader confronts Maul (along with Devon and Master Eeko-Dio Daki) in a showdown. Surprisingly, Vader doesn’t speak at all during the encounter, even though fans anticipated some dialogue, particularly between him and Maul.
According to Dave Filoni, as reported by Polygon, the core of Darth Vader’s character is that he’s completely separated from his former self, Anakin Skywalker. He actively rejects anything that connects him to his past. This is why he destroys Jedi – they serve as a reminder of the friends he betrayed and the life he left behind, a life he now feels he gained nothing from. He believes he was misled and ultimately lost everything, and he can’t come to terms with that reality.
Filoni explained that the power of Darth Vader comes from his lack of personality. He doesn’t care about others, feels no compassion, and only focuses on eliminating anything that stands in his way. He simply sees obstacles to be destroyed.
Some of Dave Filoni’s statements about Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader really resonate and are key to understanding Anakin’s character. However, other parts of what he said feel surprisingly inaccurate. Specifically, the idea that Vader and Anakin are separate people is demonstrably false, both in a literal sense and even considering Filoni’s intended meaning. Furthermore, the notion that Vader isn’t a character with motivations of his own seems to completely misinterpret who he is.
Seeing Anakin And Vader As One Is Critical To His Character

It’s reasonable to view Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader as distinct individuals within the same mind. This becomes clear when Anakin turns to the dark side in Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Even while still responding to the name Anakin when talking to Obi-Wan Kenobi and Padmé, he’s actively trying to suppress that former self—figuratively, not literally—and fully embrace his new identity as a Sith Lord, without regret. The Obi-Wan Kenobi series further supports this idea, with Vader repeatedly claiming that Anakin is “gone” and only “what remains” exists.
This all began with the initial trilogy, which established that the returning Jedi was actually Anakin Skywalker. In Return of the Jedi, Vader embodied the internal conflict between the Jedi Anakin and the Sith Lord Darth Vader. However, Anakin was never a completely separate person from Vader. While he fell to the dark side, becoming corrupted by anger and hate, he remained fundamentally Anakin underneath it all.
This is a crucial part of Anakin’s personality, and it explains why the idea that he turned to the dark side too quickly doesn’t quite make sense. Anakin’s descent wasn’t sudden; it happened gradually. Star Wars: The Clone Wars really emphasized this, but even the prequel films show the series of events that led to his ultimate fall.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always been fascinated by Anakin Skywalker. It’s easy to focus on the dark stuff – like when he massacres the Tusken Raiders in Attack of the Clones or gets brutally violent with Rush Clovis in The Clone Wars. He was clearly troubled, angry, and quick to resort to violence long before he ever became Darth Vader. But what really gets me is looking at the other side of things. Palpatine totally manipulated him, and honestly, the Jedi weren’t exactly supportive from the moment they brought him to Coruscant in The Phantom Menace. It’s a controversial take, I know, but I think they really failed him, too. It’s that complexity that makes his story so compelling.
It’s crucial to realize that all of Anakin’s contrasting qualities and experiences – like his brutal killing of the Tusken Raiders versus his childhood kindness – are parts of the same person. And importantly, both sides of his nature contribute to his fall to the dark side and, ultimately, his redemption.
Does Dave Filoni Truly Understand Darth Vader?

Filoni’s comments make you wonder how well he truly knows the character, which is crucial now that he’s playing such a big role in Star Wars. It’s clear Anakin struggles to come to terms with his actions and consistently tries to erase reminders of his past and everything he’s lost.
That idea is completely different from what Dave Filoni has said about Darth Vader not being Anakin Skywalker. Claiming that Vader isn’t Anakin shows a real misunderstanding of Anakin’s character and what makes his story so strong and captivating. This is particularly concerning for the future of Star Wars.
