A popular PC game on Steam is facing a massive wave of negative reviews. The game had already received some criticism after a couple of updates players didn’t like, dropping its Steam rating from “Overwhelmingly Positive” to “Mixed.” Now, a large-scale review bombing has pushed the rating even lower to “Mostly Negative.”
Okay, so Slay the Spire 2 had some early complaints about updates, but now people are getting upset about something different. It turns out Anita Sarkeesian consulted on the game, and that’s causing a bit of a stir. We don’t actually know what she consulted on – it’s just listed in the credits. A lot of fans aren’t thrilled about it, and that’s what everyone’s talking about right now.
Slay the Spire 2 Controversy
Anita Sarkeesian became well-known in the early 2010s for her videos analyzing how female characters are portrayed in video games. Unfortunately, this work led to significant online harassment, most notably during an event called Gamergate. While Gamergate itself died down, the criticism surrounding it continues. That’s why the upcoming game Slay the Spire 2 is currently receiving negative reviews simply because Anita Sarkeesian was hired as a consultant.
The game is currently receiving a lot of criticism. Over the past month, 65% of the 51,859 reviews have been negative, largely due to recent updates and another issue. It’s unclear how Valve will respond, but they often remove reviews over time. So far, the game’s developer, Mega Crit, hasn’t commented on the situation. We’ll provide updates if that changes. If you see a “Mostly Negative” review score, these are the reasons why.
The negative reaction to the game has been mostly limited to the Steam platform. Because the game is still in early access, reviews haven’t appeared on sites like Metacritic yet. Also, since it’s currently only available on PC, console players haven’t had a chance to review it. Surprisingly, the game’s launch trailer hasn’t been affected by this criticism.
