Insomniac Reveals One Big Difference Between Wolverine and Spider-Man Games

As a huge X-Men fan, I’m incredibly excited for Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine – it’s easily one of my most anticipated games coming in 2026! We finally got a really good look at how the combat will work during the recent State of Play, and it looks amazing. Insomniac proved with the Marvel’s Spider-Man games that they know how to make a great superhero game, so a lot of us are curious to see how Wolverine will feel different. Luckily, they recently shared some details about that, giving us a hint of what to expect!

As a huge Marvel fan, I’m so hyped that we’re finally getting closer to the release of Marvel’s Wolverine! The trailer was amazing – seeing Jean Grey and those brutal, realistic claw fights really got me excited. I was checking out the interview Insomniac did with IGN after the State of Play, and one thing they said has me a little worried. Apparently, Wolverine is going to be a lot more focused and story-driven than the Spider-Man games. While I loved swinging around a huge open-world New York in those games, it sounds like Wolverine will be much more linear. I’m still excited, but it might not be the same kind of free-roaming experience some of us were hoping for.

Insomniac Confirms Marvel’s Wolverine Leaves Open-World Exploration Behind for Linear Storytelling

The recent gameplay trailer made it clear that Logan’s adventure will be much more violent than Peter and Miles’ Spider-Man stories. Wolverine’s fighting style is brutal, and Insomniac Games isn’t holding back on showing that. Compared to this, the battles in Marvel’s Spider-Man seem relatively mild. Insomniac also says that exploring the world in Marvel’s Wolverine will feel significantly different from previous games.

Spider-Man is strongly connected to New York City – he’s the local hero. Wolverine, however, has lived a long life traveling the globe thanks to his healing ability. Because of this difference, the developers at Insomniac decided that a large, open-world map for Wolverine wouldn’t suit his story as well as it does for Spider-Man.

Insomniac’s Mike Daly explained to IGN that they didn’t aim to create a sprawling open-world or sandbox game. Instead, they focused on a fast-paced, story-driven experience, similar to a comic book. Players won’t freely roam a large world; they’ll be directed through the game by missions and the unfolding plot. While there will still be choices to make, they’ll focus more on how you approach a situation rather than where you go.

Even though the game isn’t an open world, you’ll still be able to interact with your surroundings. As the story unfolds, you’ll visit diverse environments that will affect how you move and explore, according to Daly. These areas will offer unique challenges and opportunities to use Wolverine’s abilities – you’ll be able to use the environment for stealth, exploration, and other gameplay options, even if access to these areas is story-driven.

This shift back to a traditional, story-focused single-player game reminds me of classic superhero titles, which could be a positive. While open-world games are enjoyable, a Marvel’s Wolverine game is fundamentally about experiencing a compelling narrative. A more structured storyline, where events unfold in a planned manner, might be the most effective way to deliver that authentic feel. Given Logan’s focused nature and clear objectives, it fits that he would progress directly from one mission to the next, rather than freely exploring a large world.

I’m so excited to finally see how Insomniac Games tells Logan’s story! We’ll all get to experience Marvel’s Wolverine when it comes out on the PS5 on September 15th.

What are your thoughts on Insomniac going back to a more straightforward gameplay approach with Marvel’s Wolverine?
