Season 4 of Invincible is out now, and it brilliantly spoofs a classic sci-fi series that’s been around for 60 years. The new episodes continue the story from season 3, dealing with the aftermath of the Invincible War and the battle against Conquest, while also setting the stage for the upcoming Viltrumite War. Despite all this, the show cleverly included a hilarious parody of a hugely popular sci-fi franchise, and it’s done incredibly well.
Season 4 of Invincible starts with Mark Grayson facing increasingly difficult challenges. He’s dealing with multiple new threats, including the return of the Sequids, a dinosaur-based eco-terrorist, and a warlord from a planet nearing its end. Meanwhile, Allen and Nolan are busy preparing for a full-scale campaign against the Viltrumites. They journey across the galaxy gathering weapons to harm the Viltrum Empire, encountering some unusual aliens during their travels.
Invincible Season 4, Episode 2’s Space Crew Is A Parody Of Star Trek: The Next Generation
Nolan and Allen returned to Talescria, the Coalition of Planets’ home world, before beginning their mission. They shared their plan to find enemies of the Viltrumites, aware that the Viltrum Empire was hunting them. Fortunately, Telia had a solution: a way to travel the universe undetected. Together, Nolan, Allen, and Telia set off on an old, beat-up ship called The Venture, crewed by characters clearly inspired by the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
The Venture’s bridge looks remarkably like the bridge from Star Trek, instantly signaling that this is a parody. The costumes are also very similar to those worn in Star Trek, but with a twist. Like the original, the captain wears red, and the rest of the crew wear colors such as yellow and green.
When the crew of Invincible first comes aboard The Venture, the captain introduces three members: Worg, Download, and Counselor Tuva. These characters are obvious spoofs of Worf, Data, and Deanna Troi from The Next Generation, and their visual appearances closely resemble the Star Trek characters they’re parodying, which adds to the humor.
This Invincible episode includes a fun nod to Star Trek, and it’s not the first time the show has referenced the franchise – it originally appeared in the Invincible comics. Plus, Zachary Quinto, who voices a robot in this episode, famously played Spock in the recent Star Trek movies. You don’t need to be a Star Trek fan to enjoy Invincible, but knowing the show adds an extra layer of enjoyment.
Invincible Season 4, Episode 2 Is One Of The Show’s Funniest Yet
Episode 2 of Invincible season 4 includes a funny Star Trek: The Next Generation parody, and is generally much more comedic than the episode before it. Allen the Alien provides a lot of the humor, with his scenes being particularly funny. The strange creatures Allen and Nolan meet on their travels add even more opportunities for jokes.
The second episode features two of the show’s funniest recurring jokes. First, Allen and Telia are consistently and loudly intimate each night, keeping Nolan awake on his uncomfortable couch. The other is a darker, but still humorous, element: Allen is constantly surprised by how readily the Viltrumites try to kill Nolan. This happens so frequently that it becomes a running gag, adding both comedy and depth to the world of Invincible.
The second episode of Invincible is quite dark, starting with a flashback to the Viltrum Empire. Despite this, it also contains one of the funniest scenes we’re likely to see in what promises to be a very intense fourth season.
