This week, Bungie surprised Destiny 2 players by announcing they’re starting to reduce support for the game. This has led many to wonder: does this mean Destiny 2 is being completely shut down?
If you’ve only been following the news and social media, you might think Destiny 2 is ending. But the situation is actually more complicated than it appears.
Let’s clear up what’s going on with Destiny 2. Many players are wondering if the game is ending, or if it will still be available to play. We’re here to give you the details.
Is Destiny 2 shutting down?
Don’t worry, Destiny 2 isn’t going anywhere. You’ll be able to keep playing it for a long time to come.
However, Bungie has announced that it is winding down live-service support for the game.
Destiny will receive one final major update, after which the developers won’t add any new content. Players will then be free to continue enjoying the game as it is.
When is Destiny 2’s final update?
Destiny 2’s final update will release on 9 June 2026, Bungie has confirmed.
This news was announced on Bungie’s official website, with the developers stating: “As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games. To that end, on June 9, 2026, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 to begin that new journey as a studio.
While we’re winding down active development, Destiny 2 will still be playable for years to come, much like the first Destiny is now. This final update will focus on making the game a good experience for both returning and new players.
In a recent blog post, Bungie explained that this update is designed to be impactful, taking into account years of feedback from players and incorporating their most requested features.
On June 9th, we’re releasing a bunch of improvements and fixes for all Destiny 2 players. While some of these were originally planned for later, we decided to include them in this update so you could enjoy them sooner.
We want Destiny 2 to be a game you enjoy returning to, where every activity feels worthwhile. We also aim to offer a diverse range of things to do, so you can always find something that matches how you feel like playing.

We’ve been building and growing Destiny 2 for a long time, and while change can be a little daunting, it’s also incredibly exciting. Looking forward, our main goal is still to create games that both we and our players love.
All of us at Bungie are incredibly grateful for your support and for sharing this adventure with us across the solar system. We look forward to continuing this journey with you for many years to come.
Destiny 2 originally came out on September 6, 2017, marking a significant period of success. We’ll share details on Bungie’s upcoming games as soon as they’re announced, and it’s worth remembering they’ve already released Marathon!
