Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is now available on PlayStation 5 and is receiving great reviews. It’s expected to become even more immersive next year with the addition of optional PlayStation VR2 support.
If you have the headset, you’ll know Gran Turismo 7 is already great, but it gets even better when used with it. We anticipate a similar improvement with the excellent flight simulator from Xbox Game Studios.
In an interview with XDA, Jorg Neumann, the head of the game’s development, revealed that virtual reality compatibility was always part of the plan. Sony also encouraged this feature, noting the VR headset has a dedicated and enthusiastic community.
Given how challenging MFS24 is to begin with, getting it to work with PSVR2 is quite an accomplishment, according to an aviation expert.
He said:
The key to a good VR experience is a smooth frame rate and ensuring it’s comfortable for the user. We need to achieve at least 48 frames per second, but ideally 60 with dual rendering. Techniques like foveated rendering – which focuses processing power on where the eye is looking – and other optimizations are helping us get there. We’re almost at the level of performance we want, but we’re spending a few more months refining things to make it perfect. That’s our main focus right now.
Neumann said he’s tried an early version of the product and thinks it’s enjoyable and visually impressive, but it still needs some work before it’s fully polished and ready for public release.
The team considered releasing the feature as a trial version at first, but ultimately chose to spend a few extra months polishing it to ensure a good user experience.
Considering how good MFS24 looks, we’re really eager to try it out and see how it performs. We generally think flying games with detailed cockpits are great in virtual reality, and this one seems like it could be a perfect match.
Making sudden, jerky movements with the plane could be tricky, but if you fly smoothly, it should be a comfortable experience. It’s sure to make exploring the game world feel much more immersive and realistic.
