With the conclusion of Yellowstone, Beth and Rip are embarking on a new chapter. Following a fire in Dillon, Montana, they’ve decided to leave Montana and start a new life in Texas, as seen in their spinoff series. This marks a significant change for the couple, who initially settled in Montana at the end of Yellowstone Season 5, led by Kevin Costner as John Dutton.
The show Dutton Ranch began streaming on Paramount+ on May 15th, offering viewers a look at Beth and Rip’s life after Yellowstone. When a fire damages their new ranch, they move to Texas. This signals a major shift for Taylor Sheridan’s universe, as a significant part of the Dutton family decides to leave Montana and break away from the original Yellowstone ranch.
Beth And Rip Leave The Yellowstone And Montana Behind In Dutton Ranch
After a fire destroys their ranch in Dillon, Beth and Rip are forced to leave Montana and begin a new life elsewhere. This marks the first time anyone from their family has left the state since they originally settled there 140 years ago, as shown in the prequel to Yellowstone, titled 1883. The prequel details the story of how the family came to settle in the valley.
In their new series, Beth and Rip are doing something no Dutton has done in over a century: leaving Montana and disconnecting from their ranching roots. This is the first time the family has officially made their home in Texas, though some of their ancestors briefly traveled through Fort Worth back in 1883.
The Dutton family has officially established a presence in Texas by purchasing the Edwards Ranch and renaming it the Dutton Ranch. Despite the dry land, Rip assures his wife, Beth, that they will thrive. They set up their business in two adjacent storefronts.
Okay, so Beth and Rip have moved down to South Texas, and let me tell you, the scenery – and the characters! – are fantastic. They quickly cross paths with Beulah Jackson, played brilliantly by Annette Bening, a true cattle queen, and Ed Harris, who’s just wonderfully warm as a local vet. What I really appreciate is that while their lives are different now, this new storyline feels like a natural progression, unlike some of the other expansions of the Yellowstone universe. It doesn’t feel forced at all, just… a continuation of their story in a new setting.
CBS’s Marshals Maintains A Key Part Of John Dutton’s Yellowstone Legacy
While not as beloved by original Yellowstone fans as the main series, the show Marshals continues the story of John Dutton’s world. The Yellowstone sequel, featuring Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, hasn’t resonated with longtime viewers. However, it remains one of the most-watched shows on television.
The premiere of CBS’s Marshals in April drew 26.5 million viewers across both television and streaming platforms, marking a new high for the Yellowstone universe. However, despite its strong debut, Marshals has the lowest ratings of any series in the Yellowstone franchise, with a 47% critic score and a 26% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The new Yellowstone spin-off, Marshals, is proving more popular with audiences than the original series. However, it keeps one key aspect of Yellowstone that the Dutton Ranch spin-off leaves behind: Kayce continues to live and work on a part of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, specifically at East Camp, which keeps him connected to his family’s land and his father, John Dutton’s, history.
As Yellowstone continues with Kayce’s storyline in Marshals, the show’s iconic Montana setting remains central. Kayce is still connected to his family’s ranch, while the developments with Beth and Rip signal a shift for Yellowstone, bringing a new spinoff closer to the original series’ roots.
Taylor Sheridan is known for hit TV shows like Landman, which is set in West Texas. He now lives and has a large production facility in Texas, and this location seems to be influencing his recent Western-themed series, including Landman and Dutton Ranch. Ultimately, Dutton Ranch feels like a strong starting point for the future of the Yellowstone universe.
